Description: No, it is not your imagination. Even preservationists know that historic preservation can be confusing and seem overly complicated or fussy to most people! This session will be jointly presented from the state and local perspectives. Michelle and Katie will work to demystify and dispel some of the more negative connotations associated with preservation, especially at the local level, and focus on its many community benefits and financial incentives.
Webinar - Talking Race for Planners
The 2021 amendments (E2SHB 1220) to the Growth Management Act (GMA) require that jurisdictions identify policies and regulations that result in racially disparate impacts, displacement and exclusion in housing. Jurisdictions must also work with their communities to identify and implement policies and regulations that begin to undo such impacts.
At Commerce, we know these conversations can be difficult. To assist jurisdiction’s staff, Commerce will be hosting a free webinar on how jurisdictions might best engage in these discussions about race when addressing these new GMA housing element requirements. BDS Planning, a Commerce-hired consultant, will present best public engagement practices when discussing racially disparate impacts, exclusion and displacement, as well as identify tools that can be used to reach out and engage community organizations which represent racial groups to support your planning work.

This webinar is scheduled for Wednesday, May 24, 2023 from 1:30pm - 2:30pm. Please register in advance for this webinar by clicking the button below.
Nominations open for 2023 Governor’s Smart Communities Awards
Annual awards program celebrates excellence in planning for future growth, livable communities:

The Washington State Department of Commerce is seeking nominations for the 17th annual Governor's Smart Communities Awards, a program that recognizes outstanding work by local governments and their partners on community planning and development.
For almost 20 years, this program has celebrated the accomplishments of local communities that make Washington state an extraordinary place to live, work and play. With great examples of downtown redevelopments, regional coordination on transit and tribal community engagement, each award winner deserves to be recognized by our statewide community. Their local and regional projects provide scalable innovation and exciting models for what we can all do to strengthen and improve our communities.
Coloring the History of Gig Harbor: Community Engagement and Art
The Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance has a new Executive Director, Carianne Ekberg, when she joined the Alliance she was interested in launching a new program which would encourage engagement and help celebrate the historic character of downtown Gig Harbor. Inspired by Color Chehalis!, they designed a unique way to engage, educate, and celebrate through “Coloring the History of Gig Harbor” which includes three opportunities for participation.

Youth Cover Art Contest
School children aged children from pre-school through twelfth grade living in the area can enter the youth cover art competition right now! The Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance have provided some design prompts including “What are some of the most historical sites in downtown Gig Harbor?” and “What kinds of fishing boats or sea life can you find in Gig Harbor?” to allow local youth to consider the both the built and natural environment of Gig Harbor are say develop their cover art.
Engaging youth in economic development, historic preservation, and community investments can be an important step in creating residents that not only take an interest in where they live but can engage in the decision making and governing processes that create a robust future for their cities. When asked about why engaging youth is important to the mission of The Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance she had this to say “It’s our job as adults and parents to help educate today’s youth about their community. If we do so, the hope is those children grow up and take interest in being part of the community, investing in our city, and continuing to preserve the rich history.”

Coloring Book Page Design
In addition to engaging youth, local artists are able to submit coloring page designs based on Gig Harbor. Artists can choose from indigenous plants and animals, landmarks, historic and cultural events, and may be requested to design multiple pages depending on the topic. Artists entries are being accepted now and selected artists will be chosen in May of 2023.
Local artists have a wonderful opportunity to share what is unique and valued by the community and help to share the story of Gig Harbor through not only their own coloring page design but the engagement with the community members who will color those pages.

Enjoying the Published: Coloring the History of Gig Harbor
This is a first time program for the Gig Harbor community. It represents a partnership with the Peninsula Art League, the Rotary Club of Gig Harbor, The City of Gig Harbor, and the Downtown Waterfront Alliance. Thanks funding from local grants the Alliance will print 5,000 copies of the coloring book for distribution.
The Alliance hopes to see the coloring books become a coveted item that encourages community members to come downtown in search of a coloring book and maybe find a new favorite shop or local business. The Alliance has partnered with the Gig Harbor Rotary Club to host an art walk featuring all the drawings submitted for the cover art contest, which sounds like the best reason to visit the Summer Arts Festival and a great chance to celebrate local youth.
