PAWS is one of the few sanctuaries in the U.S. that rescues and cares for bears – while also working to end their exploitation in roadside zoos, pseudo-sanctuaries, traveling shows, cruel cub petting operations, and the exotic pet trade.
Caring for bears in captivity is challenging. These highly intelligent and active animals naturally roam territories spanning 50 square miles or more, foraging, exploring, caring for young, and seeking out mates.
At PAWS, we strive to give our three bears a more natural life, with spacious habitats filled with shady oak trees and native grasses. Caregivers scatter nutritious foods to encourage natural foraging behaviors, keeping both body and mind engaged.
Meet the remarkable bears who call PAWS home:

Dally
Our newest bear resident, black bear Dally arrived in March after being seized by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife from a so-called “rescue” facility under investigation for serious animal welfare violations.
Born in the wild in California, she was taken from her natural home as a youngster and spent most of her life confined to a cage.
Now, for the first time in her captive life, Dally roams a spacious habitat. This quiet bear, with her soulful eyes, has quickly captured our hearts.

Mack
Mack, a black bear who came to PAWS in 2016, was born in the wild. He was orphaned as a cub and found missing part of his right hind leg (possibly a birth defect). Wildlife authorities captured the young bear, who was too habituated to humans to be a candidate for rehabilitation and release. Mack was given a permanent home at PAWS.
Despite his missing leg, Mack is an energetic and agile bear who climbs, plays, and loves to splash in his pool. His resilience is an inspiration to all of us.

Ben
This month marks 13 years since Ben was rescued from a barren roadside zoo cage in North Carolina. Deprived of all that is natural to a bear, he had paced endlessly and would bite the chain-link fence out of frustration and boredom.
Thanks to a legal victory led by local advocates and attorneys, Ben was freed and flown to California courtesy of Federal Express on a plane dubbed “Bear Force One.”
Today, Ben has the choice to roam, swim, or rest in comfort.
At PAWS, Dally, Mack, and Ben represent the hope and recovery that true sanctuary makes possible. We are proud to provide them with safety, respect, and plenty of TLC.

RESCUED TIGER FALCOR
PAWS provides lifetime care to the tigers, bears, elephants, and other animals who call our sanctuary home. Your kind support provides expert daily care, necessary veterinary treatments, and specialized nutritional support, all tailored to the individual needs of each animal. Your gifts make this excellent care possible.
| | There are many ways you can help PAWS animals: | | |
Donate. Although we work closely with regulatory agencies on animal rescues, PAWS receives no government funding and must rely on your donations to continue our work. When you make a contribution for the wild animals at PAWS, it is unlike any other. How many people can say they’ve gifted elephants with spacious rolling hills and a more natural life, or made a present of a lush, tree-filled habitat for a tiger? Or given a bear a new chance at life? And you ensure we are prepared for the next wild animal in dire need of rescue. Three ways to give and every donation matters.

PAWS is proud of its 4-star rating with Charity Navigator - the highest rating possible. We are part of an elite group of charities with an "exceptional" designation (at least four consecutive years of 4-star ratings), meaning that your gift will have the greatest impact possible. CharityWatch gives PAWS an "A" rating.

Give to one of PAWS' ongoing MightyCause campaigns: Our "Dollars for Dirt" or "Give BIG for PAWS' Elephants" fundraisers for the elephants, like Prince (pictured), or our "Help Captive Tigers" fundraiser to benefit the rescued tigers living at our ARK 2000 sanctuary.
Adopt A PAWS Animal. If you would like to help our animals, one of the best ways is to become an "adoptive parent," or give a PAWS adoption as a gift to an animal lover in your life. PAWS adoptions are symbolic adoptions only. No animal will be sent! Learn more
