Herbert C. Bonner

Engine Re-power project

We are thrilled to announce that Prudence & Bay Islands Transport is a recipient of the State Clean Diesel grant which is funded through the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management and Diesel Emissions Reduction Act for marine engine replacement!

The current engines and systems on the Herbert C. Bonner are over 50 years old. This funding will allow us to replace these old systems with new Tier 3 engines and generators, which will increase fuel efficiency and greatly reduce our greenhouse gas emissions.

The Herbert C. Bonner is due this winter for its bi-annual haul out and Coast Guard dry dock inspection. It is during this haul out that engine replacement work will be completed. While the Bonner is on dry dock the Prudence Ferry will be in service as it usually is during the winter months. We are reviewing our ridership on the Prudence Ferry from last winter and ridership over the next few months to determine if we will be modifying the winter schedule to accommodate more vehicle traffic. Please continue to book all reservations in advance in order to guarantee your travel.

We hope you can join us in our excitement to move forward with this project and to do our part in reducing our carbon footprint and impact on the environment!

From Officer Tavernier:

As the busy season comes to an end and people close up their homes for winter we often see the ferry parking lot fill up with seasonal vehicles. Officer Tavernier is available to provide transportation for people to leave their vehicle at their island home instead of in the parking lot. Stop by and see him at ferry time to arrange a ride.

Officer Tavernier is available again this winter season to conduct winter home checks for those who are not on island. Stop by to see him at ferry time or leave your name and phone number at the ferry office to get your home added to the list.
