This Week in Preservation
|
By Jason Wilson, Director of Operations 'This Week in Preservation' recaps Preservation Buffalo Niagara's recent activities throughout the region.
DOT Section 106 Consulting Parties Meeting re: the NY Gateway Connections Improvement Project to the US Peace Bridge PlazaPreservation Buffalo Niagara, representing the interests of the Western New York community regarding matter relating to Historic Preservation, are concerned that several adverse impacts will arise as a result of the proposed NY Gateway Connections Improvement Project to the US Peace Bridge Plaza. On Tuesday of this week PBN participated in a consulting parties meeting hosted by the NYS Department of Transportation concerning the proposed construction of several new ramps adjacent to historic Front Park. PBN's primary concerns include: - Destruction of the historic viewshed from Front Park as well as from historic residential properties directly adjacent to the Park. One of Front Park's original historic purposes was to showcase the sweeping views of Lake Erie, the waterfront and the Niagara River available from this site. The construction of the proposed ramps along the southwestern boundary of Front Park will obstruct these principle views.
- The current configuration of the proposed ramps would force wide-load trucks to use local streets including Busti Avenue. If the proposed project moves forward, whenever there is congestion on the bridge these wide-load trucks will be forced to sit and idle in front of the properties creating several serious side effects.
- Expanding the Area of Potential Effect (APE) for the proposed project. The boundaries of the APE currently excluded several significant historic resources including the Hutchinson Chapel, the Episcopal Church Home, large sections of the adjacent historic neighborhood, the Colonel Ward Pumping Station, the Buffalo Yacht Club, as well as other resources.
We will keep you updated on this issue as more information becomes available to PBN. Contact Jason Wilson at PBN if you have any questions/concerns regarding this project via email - jwilson@p-b-n.org or via phone - 716-852-3300 Ardmore Place Advocacy On Tuesday of this week Preservation Buffalo Niagara received several emails and phone calls from concerned citizens on Ardmore Place in Buffalo. The residents of the quiet, one-way street were excited to find a layer of historic brick under asphalt that was being removed as part of the city's repaving project. Eager to leave the historic brick exposed, residents reached out to PBN for guidance. Since the neighborhood is not historically designated at the local level, the residents are not guaranteed a voice in the conversation about the future of this character-defining feature. PBN urged residents to call their Common Council Member, David Rivera, and voice their desire to have the historic brick remain uncovered. PBN also called Council Member Rivera's office several times and expressed the opportunity to leave this unique element exposed. Brick streets, like other historic elements in our neighborhoods, are vital to creating a unique sense of place and serve as the foundation for community pride. According to this recent article posted today, city hall officials are very close to making a decision to keep the historic brick uncovered. PBN urges you to voice your opinion to Common Council Member David Rivera and/or Public Works Commissioner Steven Stepniak.
