This Week in Primary Care
The Universal Primary Care Issue
--View as Webpage--
For over a decade, Vermonters have been considering universal primary care as a strategy to improve everyone’s health and contain healthcare costs.
That idea is getting practical this year. A few months ago Vermont’s Governor signed a primary-care law that demands a feasibility study on universal primary care. And his challenger has proposed placing a tax on Vermont’s wealthiest in order to fund free primary care for all Vermonters– read more about that in the featured article below.
For Primary Care for All Americans, the public interest in these ideas is exhilarating: Vermont could become the first state to make primary care a public utility. PC4AA President Michael Fine met last week with Vermont primary-care and public-health leaders to consider forming a Primary Care for All Vermonters State Workgroup. They will meet again in a couple weeks.
Please read about what Vermonters are weighing and join our next Teach-In/Learn-In November 17th with Kathleen Bartholomew, a founding board member of Nurses Transforming Healthcare. For the past five years, Nurses Transforming Healthcare has advanced the idea of healthcare as an essential service, founded on strong, community-based primary care. They have recently announced their intention to continue their work through Primary Care for All Americans. From Rhode Island to California to Vermont to Texas, we are thrilled to be learning together how to get primary care to every person in every neighborhood and town!
