Dear Friends,
Good-bye 2021! Another year in the books. Another year of figuring out how to do things differently and another year of trying to adjust to constant change.
I am so proud of our staff at PCA Illinois. They continue to come up with new and innovative ways to spread our message that all children deserve great childhoods and that everyone has a role to play in preventing child abuse and neglect. Throughout the year our staff provided safe in-person trainings, facilitated online webinars, hosted numerous screenings of the documentary film Resilience, and continued to work with partners like you to share much needed resources. Staff also worked really hard to plan, develop, and hold our 27th Annual Statewide Conference virtually for the second year in a row. Our plenary speakers and workshops presenters were amazing and over 500 of you heard their messages of resilience and perseverance.
Resilience and perseverance. What great words to take us into 2022!

We are excited to welcome new staff member, Kelsey Greene! Kelsey is our new ACEs Project Director, and we are looking forward to seeing what she brings to this project and the agency. Kelsey graduated with a BSW from the University of Illinois School of Social Work in 2017 and worked in case management for 4 years after graduation.
Learning about ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) can help us recognize and understand the impact toxic stress and trauma can have on a child’s life. An impact that can last into adulthood. Learning about ACEs can also help us build trauma-informed programs and build resilience in the children and families we work with.
- Do you need more information about ACEs?
- Does your program or agency provide trauma-informed care?
- Are you part of or would you like to become part of an ACEs network?

Child abuse and neglect affects every community, and we all have a role to play when it comes to working towards a brighter future for every child. In this section of our quarterly newsletter, we will highlight important legislation, upcoming elections, and other advocacy news. Make sure to follow along and get involved by voting, signing petitions, and advocating for change.
This quarter, we want to highlight an exciting development: The Illinois Family First Prevention Services Act plan was approved in October 2021, and efforts for implementation are already underway. Illinois’ five-year plan outlines in detail how the state will support families in crisis. Learn more about this act and how it will help families in Illinois by downloading this infographic!

Each year, the Child Welfare Information Gateway releases a new Prevention Resource Guide addressing child abuse and neglect and promoting positive parenting. Normally, we hand out copies of this great resource at our Child Abuse Prevention Month kickoff events in April, but since many of our in-person events are likely to be virtual again this year, we wanted to highlight the 2021/2022 Prevention Resource Guide in this newsletter.
The guide recognizes that there are actions we can take as a society and within communities, organizations, and families to address the root causes of child abuse and neglect. The guide seeks to highlight the innovative ways that communities around the country are doing purposeful prevention work to help children and families thrive. Download your free PDF here!

Learning about childhood trauma, abuse, and neglect can be overwhelming, but we know how important education is when it comes to these topics. In this section of the newsletter, we will highlight a book, podcast, article, or documentary that our staff members at PCA Illinois have found helpful. Whether you work in the child abuse prevention field or are a supporter of PCA Illinois' work, we hope these resources are useful to you!
This quarter, we want to highlight the book What Happened to You? by Dr. Bruce Perry and Oprah Winfrey. Our earliest experiences shape our lives far down the road, and this book provides powerful insights into the behavioral patterns so many of us struggle to understand. Through deeply personal conversations, Oprah Winfrey and renowned brain and trauma expert Dr. Bruce Perry offer a groundbreaking shift from asking “What’s wrong with you?” to asking “What happened to you?”
