Hello everybody,
At last, we have reached June! June is one of my favorite months of the year because it always has so many positive things going on that they are worth listing:
- The longest days of the year. The summer solstice (around June 20–21 in the Northern Hemisphere) brings the longest day and shortest night, flooding everything with sunlight.
- Flowers are at their peak—roses, peonies, lavender, and wildflowers light up gardens and meadows.
- Trees are full, green, and alive with birdsong and shade.
- The beginning of summer - School’s out, vacations begin, and there’s a spirit of freedom in the air.
- It’s the start of beach days, picnics, BBQs, and time spent outdoors.
- Birds sing early in the morning.
- Crickets, frogs, and soft breezes fill the warm evenings.
- Berries, cherries, watermelon, and fresh vegetables are reaching their peak.
- Farmer’s markets are full of colorful, fragrant produce (We'll start monthly trips to the Rochester Public Market in July)
- June feels like a new chapter—a time to refresh goals, take spontaneous trips, or fall in love.
- Weddings, music festivals, pride parades, and solstice celebrations take place around the world.
- There's often a sense of community and joy.
- Long, lingering sunsets paint the sky with purples, pinks, and amber.
-
Stargazing on warm nights becomes a favorite pastime.
Pretty impressive, right?! What's not to like?
In our kitchen, Chef Joe is also keeping things positive with delicious meals every day of the week (except Mondays!). The ever-popular panko crusted haddock is making a reappearance because folks just can't seem to get enough of that - and they are right! Whatever you choose, you'll get a great meal that can often be split into two meals, to make the tastiness last longer.
Being that it's the first week of June, it's time to list our monthly features:
Boardgames with Bill is back on Friday with an exploration of word building games. It's time to see which ones are the favorites!
Our Senior Spotlight this month will shine on Suzanne Kahn, current president of the Retired Women's Club. When I first started with Perinton Recreation and we saw the need for this club, Suzanne stepped up right away to help lead it. It's been going strong since then, so give Suzanne a high five when you see her in the hallways!
Mary Wagner has submitted a poem for June from her collection to make us all feel less alone with our "forgetter"... 🙂
Lin Falzano has provided us with her Fitness Tip-of-the-month, explaining why it's so important to keep our core strong.
Blood Pressure Clinics are back; as usual on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month, from 9:00 - 11:00 AM, in the PCC front lobby.
We'll also have a presentation coming up in July by Touching Hearts and the Assisted Living Locators, who will discuss the options between care at home versus assisted living facilities. I'm posting this early so many people get a chance to see this.
What a great way to get the month started!
Best,
Anke
