December 2024

Welcome to the monthly e-newsletter of the Psychoanalytic Center of the Carolinas, informing our community on upcoming training, events, and happenings of the organization.

Holmes Fellowship Recipients

The Anti-Racism Task Force of the PCC is pleased to announce the recipients of the inaugural Dorothy E. Holmes Fellowship.

Dio R. Godbold, MA, LPC is a psychoanalyst-in-training, specializing in complex trauma, traumatic grief, and end-of-life care. Originally from Venezuela, she trained as a licensed psychologist with a focus on psycho-oncology and later initiated her psychoanalytic training at the Caracas Psychoanalytic Society.

Her Holmes project explores the complexities of providing psychoanalytic services to Hispanic-Latino/a/x immigrants, focusing on challenges in therapeutic settings.

Catherine Soriano, MD is a psychoanalytically-oriented clinician in private practice in Chapel Hill. An active PCC member since matriculating in 2009, she currently has openings for in-person treatment of anxiety disorders. Catherine is grateful for the training and mentorship she has received through the constituent members of the American Psychoanalytic Association and is very glad to be part of a local option. Having previously published in the community mental health literature on the use of funds to

leverage treatment adherence, Catherine is enlivened by the present fellowship opportunity.

Her Holmes project examines the ethical challenges of disguising the process material of racial-

minority analysands in psychoanalytic research.

The Dorothy E. Holmes Fellowship is dedicated to advancing psychoanalytic research that fosters a more just society and eases personal suffering. By supporting projects focused on reducing the psychological burden experienced by individuals with marginalized identities—such as race, class, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, age, or ability—the fellowship encourages innovative approaches to understanding and addressing oppression.

New Giving Opportunities

As we head into the "short rows" of 2024 many of you may be sitting down over the holidays to discuss your end-of-year charitable contributions. Please consider including the PCC in those discussions as we offer a few, 'new-to-us' giving options to help support psychoanalytic education.

First, the PCC can now accept gifts of stocks and securities. A donation of appreciated stock could help you avoid capital gains tax and may offer a tax deduction. If you are interested in making a gift of stock, please contact Vann Pearsall for details and broker instructions.

Secondly, you can make a gift through a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) from your IRA. Individuals 70½ and older can make up to $105,000 in tax-free charitable donations during 2024. For those age 73 or older, qualified charitable distributions (QCDs) also count toward the year's required minimum distribution (RMD). Talk with your financial advisor for details specific to your IRA.

Finally, we've partnered with Charitable Adult Rides & Services (CARS) to allow us to accept car donations. You can find out more information on our CARS donation portal.  https://careasy.org/psychoanalytic-center-of-the-carolinas
