CELEBRATING THE LEGACY OF PASTOR JACK W. HAYFORD
Foursquare News

Pastor Jack Hayford, former president of The Foursquare Church, and founding pastor of The Church on the Way went to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 8th. He was 88 years old. Considered one of the most influential Foursquare figures since Founder Aimee Semple McPherson, his influence extended nationwide and internationally through his writing, speaking, songwriting, and broadcast ministries.

The longtime pastor of The Church on the Way (Van Nuys Foursquare Church) in Van Nuys, California, Pastor Jack spent 30 years of his career ministering at the Southern California congregation, originally named the First Foursquare Church of Van Nuys. During his time there, the church mushroomed from fewer than 20 people to more than 12,000 members. That growth marked it as a pioneer in the megachurch movement and, at the time, ranked it as the largest congregation in The Foursquare Church.

“Pastor Jack lived a life devoted to Jesus, one which he never wavered in or strayed from,” says Foursquare President Randy Remington. “Thousands of pastors found encouragement, inspiration, and lifelong ministry principles through his pastor’s schools and conferences. His books, songs, and teachings will continue to inspire and mentor generations to come.

GET THE RIGHT PEOPLE
IN THE ROOM
by Rev. Randall Bach
Message of the Open Bible

"The crowd laughed at him. But he made them all leave, and he took the girl’s father and mother and his three disciples into the room where the girl was lying. Holding her hand, he said to her, 'Talitha koum,' which means 'Little girl, get up!'  And the girl, who was twelve years old, immediately stood up and walked around! They were overwhelmed and totally amazed.” (Mark 5:40-42, NLT)

They laughed at Jesus! It is one thing to disagree with someone or to have sincere doubt, but laughing in someone’s face is a deflating indignity. Why did the crowd laugh? Because Jesus had just explained that Jairus’ daughter, verified as dead, was but asleep, at least in Jesus’ eyes.

Only one chapter later, when Jesus went back home to Nazareth for a visit, word of the wonders He had performed preceded Him, and people flocked to Him in the hope of receiving healing and other miracles. Verse five of chapter six records, “Because of their unbelief, he couldn’t do any miracles among them except to place his hands on a few sick people and heal them. And he was amazed at their unbelief.”  This was not you or me disappointed to find people were not healed when we prayed for them; this was Jesus! The explanation for this failure is found in that same verse: “because of their unbelief.” Thud!

Look at the connection between those two scenarios. In one, the crowd laughed at Jesus when He explained that a child whom the people understood to be dead was, in His view, but asleep and would be awakened upon His declaring it so. In the second instance, the people were so resistant, beyond a lack of faith, with determined unbelief, that Jesus, the Son of God, could perform few miracles. We are observing an important concept in these verses.

CONFIDENT DESPITE ROADBLOCKS
by John W. Kennedy // AG News

"Garza is something of a rarity,
a never-married, middle-aged woman, Hispanic church planter, and ordained AG minister."

With the Assemblies of God SoCal Network acting as a liaison, Iglesia Puente de Vida (Bridge of Life Church) in Santa Paula, California, recently managed to purchase a $1.5 million building for $170,000. By reselling the property, the church will have the necessary funds to move to a yet-to-be-determined site. When that happens, Iglesia Puente de Vida will have adequate parking for the first time in its 13-year history. Attendees now must walk two to four blocks to reach the building.

Adelita Garza planted the church in a garage, which it outgrew in three months. Puente de Vida began as a Spanish-language church, but it is now bilingual. Garza preaches two services, one in Spanish and one in English. For three years, she translated herself.

Garza’s parents—her 88-year-old Mexican-born father, Adan, and 87-year-old Texas-born mother, Rosa—met in Washington state, where they worked as farm laborers. Adelita, 50, is the 10th of 13 children. For her higher education, she moved to California, graduating with a bachelor’s degree from the AG’s Bethany College and a Master of Divinity from Fuller Theological Seminary.

In 2005, Garza started a Spanish-speaking ministry called Puente (Bridge) at Connect Church in Ventura, where she served on staff. The church plant emerged from that experience.

THE FOURSQUARE CHURCH CELEBRATES
100 YEARS OF MINISTRY
Foursquare.org // Events

On Jan. 1, 1923, Sister Aimee Semple McPherson held her very first church service at Angelus Temple in Los Angeles. Now, 100 years later, we will celebrate all that God has done in Foursquare in the U.S. and around the world.

STAYING THE COURSE:
PASSING SAFELY THROUGH THE PRESSURES OF
OUR DAY
PAOC // Testimony Magazine

One of the best bits of advice I was given in a time of major transition, and just as I began serving in full-time ministry, was “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” (Proverbs 4:23). The New Living Translation says it like this: “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” The New King James Version says, “Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.” Could these words be true of our hearts individually and of our heartbeat denominationally? The courses of our lives, personally and collectively, are being challenged and tested with every thought and every decision we make. And it is our shared heart responses that ultimately influence our decisions and culture as a denominational family.

Ministry has been filled with some of the most joyful and, at the same time, the most confounding experiences. The cognitive dissonance experienced in Christian community and service over time is part of what I believe God uses to prepare those who are faithful for times like these so that we might not rely on ourselves or on our own understanding, but on God, who knows all things, and in whose hands all our times are held.
