News, Tips & More for January - February
From the Executive Director / Del Director Ejecutivo
Dear PCDA Community,

We would like to wish all our families, friends, and supporters a hope-filled new year.

It is an honor and privilege to write to you as we begin PCDA’s 25th year of providing extraordinary service to the greater Los Angeles community and beyond!

We are here to profoundly impact the developmental outcomes of children with autism and other special needs through innovative multidisciplinary and family-centered therapeutic services, professional training, and outreach.

Despite the ongoing obstacles and uncertainties, this will be a year to celebrate all that we have accomplished, and to position ourselves to continue our mission for the next 25 years, and onward.

We can and will endure.

We value our connection with you, and we hope you enjoy this first newsletter of our 25th year!

Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.'s Legacy
PCDA is closed Monday, January 18, to observe and honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday held on the third Monday of January. It celebrates the life and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

"I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.'"
—Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Meet PCDA Board Member Hubert Ho

Hubert Ho is your average, everyday Renaissance Man. Born and raised in Hong Kong, Hubert spent time in New Zealand and Japan before moving to the U.S. in 2009. Hubert was trained as an architect, and worked in a variety of industries including architecture, e-commerce, investment management, and biotech. He is currently Chief Operating Officer at 8BioMed, a biotech venture company. Hubert’s personal interests include Japanese art and furniture design.

With someone like Hubert’s diverse interests, background, and education, it would be easy to draw the conclusion that he is someone who had a mantra of life being a series of teaching moments. But for Hubert, life is a series of learning moments. An avid reader with insatiable curiosity, Hubert shares: “The more I read and do, the more I feel how little I know. So much in life is unknown and probably unknowable, and sometimes a new finding or a new generation gives us a new perspective.”

Hubert was introduced to PCDA when he heard Dr. Diane Cullinane speak at another organization’s event several years ago. As coincidence would have it and around that same time, Hubert noticed that his youngest child, who was then 3 years old, was experiencing some behavioral issues that were beginning to impact his development.

Hubert and his wife had their son assessed at the regional center and the school district, and also reached out to Diane to see if she could help. Diane recommended PCDA’s Building Blocks Program. Building Blocks is a weekly intervention program where the client family meets one on one with a Developmental Interventionist (DI) who provides new activities and ways to expand a child’s everyday learning experiences, supports them through everyday challenges of parenting and child rearing, and provides consultation and assistance to other caregivers and service providers. The Ho family began Building Blocks and found it effective, and their lives improved.

The whole family enjoyed their participation in the program and appreciated PCDA's approach, and share: “We saw how it helped our younger son and we felt the devotion and commitment of PCDA. That was how I started to get involved in PCDA. PCDA not only helps but empowers kids and their families to overcome child development challenges they face. PCDA has commitment, delivers its promise, and is good in what it does.”

Hubert recently moved with his family from the Pasadena area to Thousand Oaks. We are appreciative of Hubert’s service to PCDA and all he does to support our mission. “My hope for the future is that PCDA will continue to reflect, and grow its influence as a thought leader in the field.”
