Personal care home coming to Lac du Bonnet

Community members, care providers and dignitaries were on site to commemorate the day.

Community members filled Lac du Bonnet’s Pioneer Club last week to hear Premier Wab Kinew and Health, Seniors and Long-Term Care Minister Uzoma Asagwara announce the upcoming provincial budget will include funding to build a new personal care home in Lac du Bonnet.

Minister Asagwara identified the new personal care home would be operational in 2027.

Important measles information

Measles is an extremely contagious airborne disease, transmitted through direct contact with the respiratory droplets of infected individuals. This viral infection poses a considerable risk of serious health complications.

Approximately 10% of individuals infected with measles may develop complications such as otitis media (ear infection) or pneumonia. Moreover, a more severe but less common complication is encephalitis (brain inflammation), occurring in about 1 out of every 1,000 cases. This can lead to permanent neurological damage or, in severe cases, death.

In Interlake-Eastern RHA, if staff are exposed to a measles case, their immunity status will be reviewed by occupational health.

Exposed staff without evidence of immunity will be required to be off work from Day 5 to 21 following the exposure. This measure is part of our commitment to ensuring the safety and health of our staff and patients.

You can request a copy of your immunization record online or contact your local public health office for immunization documentation.

How staff can prepare:

  • Familiarize yourself with IP&C protocols and guidelines for personal protective equipment (PPE), communicable disease notification and the management of airborne precautions. Use appropriate PPE.

  • Ensure you have documented proof of two doses of measles vaccinations. If you lack proof of immunity, it's important to get vaccinated. Health-care workers are eligible through the provincial vaccine program. Fully immunized individuals with documentation don’t require serology to confirm immunity. To arrange for immunization, reach out to your health-care provider, public health office or Occupational Health services (204-785-4717).

  • If you lack documentation or if your immunization record does not reflect your measles vaccinations yet you are certain you've received two doses of the vaccine or have had a previous natural infection, you may choose to undergo serology (bloodwork) to test for immunity to measles. Please contact your health-care provider to arrange for bloodwork.

Stonewall welcomes health worker from Philippines

The community of Stonewall created a welcoming experience for a health-care worker and her husband who recently arrived from the Philippines.

Clarissa Lizarondo came to Canada in February as a participant in the Philippines recruitment initiative, along with her husband Dexter.

In the Philippines, Clarissa worked as a staff nurse in a primary hospital. Here in Manitoba, she’s working as a health-care aide at Stonewall Hospital.

“Moving to a new place can be overwhelming, but with the support of community members and coworkers, our settling in Stonewall becomes a smoother transition,” Clarissa said.

“My husband and I feel the warm welcome from everyone. They are so generous and kind too. We received donations from different people — coworkers and community members.”  Read more.

International Children's Book Day

April 2 is International Children's Book Day and IEHF wants to recognize and thank Amma’s Bookshelf Fund at the Selkirk & District Community Foundation.

This fund was created by donor who knew how important it is to read to and with our children and wanted all babies born in Selkirk to go home with a book.

In memory of Eleanor Johnson, this fund provides every baby born at Selkirk Regional Health Centre with their first book — a copy of Goodnight Moon.

Seven-year-old Emma Volk of Selkirk recently travelled to L.A. for the Golden State Film Festival to watch the screening of a short film called The Dance, which she starred in.

The film is a true story based on Manitoba's medically assisted death program. The film premiere was held at the TLC Chinese 6 theatre on Hollywood Boulevard. Learn more.

Green Shirt Day

Green Shirt Day is coming up on April 7. This initiative was created to honour the legacy of Humboldt Broncos defenceman Logan Boulet and to recognize all donors who have offered a gift of life to others in need.

Organ and tissue donation saves lives. By registering your intent using Manitoba’s online organ and tissue donor registry, www.signupforlife.ca, information about your donation decision will be available and accessible should it ever be needed.

Registration takes two minutes and three pieces of information — name, birthdate and nine-digit Manitoba Health card number.

Green Shirt Day 2024 has a new logo design with a Manitoba connection. In the wake of the 2018 crash, Waywayseecappo First Nation in southwestern Manitoba created and gifted 16 star blankets to Humboldt Broncos families in honour of their lost loved ones.

IERHA loves its pets!

Feb. 20 was National Love Your Pet Day, which celebrates the bond between humans and their much-loved pets. We asked Wave readers to share photos of their furry, feathered or scaly friends. Here are a few fun photos.

This is Ernie, a three-year-old Miniature Chinese Shar Pei.

"Since I work from home, I call him my co-worker – a lazy one, at least," says his owner Kate Haas, provincial payroll specialist.

"He spends most of his day either sleeping or staring out the window, watching for other dogs he can bark at. (They need to know this is ERNIE’S HOUSE!)."

This pair of furry brothers are Luca (front) and Alberto, the feline companions of communications associate Jennifer McFee.

They like to help out while she works from home — and they even make occasional guest appearances in Teams meetings.

This is Teddy, a one-year-old Shih Tzu who is a part of the East Gate Lodge recreation team. He is a dedicated worker who brings lots of smiles to our residents, staff and family members. He is the much-loved pet of Mercedes Sweet, a recreation facilitator at East Gate Lodge. Thanks to recreation coordinator Cheryl Laferriere for this submission.
