Building Women's Health Equity - February/March 2020

An important step in your team’s project journey is to consider and plan for sustaining those well-earned improvements and relationships.
Sustainability
means that a process or state can be maintained at a certain level for as long as is desired and/or needed.
At your next team meeting, consider discussing which processes have been improved upon, have maintained that improvement, and can realistically continuing beyond the project?
Process ownership.
Who will be responsible for the audit checks, informing others if new knowledge is introduced, and reporting process data for meetings, updates, etc.?
Process Training.
Building methods to assure current and new staff are educated on the process/product is important. All staff will need regular updates to stay current on the topic and need to be willing to participate in additional Plan, Do, Study, Act (PDSA) or other testing cycles as indicated.
Process Measurement.
Even when the process/product is maintaining at goal it is important to continue to measure its effectiveness over time. Why? Unless the process is hardwired into the system of care be beware of “gravitational forces” that allow people to go back to the way it was and what “we used to before.”
Understanding your system of care over time allows your team to detect when new testing may be indicated or a change in process steps might be indicated. Last but not least, continue to celebrate sustained efforts. Remind your team, family partners, and staff of the efforts being made to improve women's care and well-being everyday!
