VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

STEVE CAMP

When our founding members first began to organize the club, they established a new tradition to help grow the club. The pirates of old had to prove themselves and earn their place amongst their mates by performing some act of bravery or buffoonery to “earn yer bones”. In our club, “earning yer bones” meant recruiting new members. The undisputed GOAT in club recruitment belongs to none other than “Boat Drink” Steve Camp.

In his time with the club he has recruited well over 400 members to include 78 new members during COVID. We all know Steve because most of us joined with his encouragement. In fact it is hard to imagine our club without Steve, as he has been in the heart of nearly all we do, and is clearly the “ corporate memory” of the history of this club. It is also very difficult to underestimate his contributions to our hearty band of buccaneers. Steve has been a member of the club from the very beginning, and this December he will celebrate his 19 anniversary making him the longest running active member.

It would take more than a few pages to sum up all of his various accomplishments but lets list a few:

● Two terms as President ● Two terms as Vice President ● Helped write our bylaws ● As President he once set up a double decker bus trip with 78 members to see Jimmy Buffett in concert in Jacksonville. This event included an overnight stay. The bus trip included many an adult beverage— and fun was had by all. ● Helped design, build, paint, and decorate all three iterations of our Pirate Parade and Mardi Gras float ● He has been in every Mardi Gras and Pirate Parade ● He was a founding member of of our Rendezvous Party and has contributed to every Rendezvous in some fashion: sponsor recruiter and fundraiser, fun and games chairman, security guard ● One year he worked Thursday through Sunday at Rendezvous, then decided to have a heart attack on Monday. The efforts of the event had worn his big heart out. ● Part of the Chainsaw Mafia after Hurricane Michael contributing time and effort and helping Parrothead members, military members and first responders. save over $170,000 in tree removal costs ● Truly the GOAT at recruiting well over 400 members to our club,

We could give him any of multiple monikers: Icon known by everyone, GOAT in member recruitment, best closer in our group, perennial top fundraiser for every Rendezvous and the most ubiquitous member of this club. Since our club has an active membership of more than 600 people right now, in 2020 it looked like no one was willing to step up to the plate and lead the club. There was even talk of the club folding without some people to take it forward. That is when Steve Camp stepped up to take over the leadership of the club as Vice President and director of fun for the club. He kept the wheels spinning during a year when no one else would.

We all owe him a great debt of gratitude. So here’s a toast to Steve Camp, Boat Drink Steve you are indeed our big hearted GOAT
