Conference presenter application closing May 1

Presenter applications for the 2025 PCSAO Annual Conference will close May 1. PCSAO is seeking unique workshops 1-3 hours in length that can be offered for social work/counselor CEUs and/or CLEs. The conference will take place Oct. 1-3 and is attended by child protection caseworkers, supervisors/managers, administrators/directors, counselors/clinicians, attorneys, and advocates from around the state. Agency leaders attend orientation

PCSAO’s annual New Executives Orientation took place April 24-25 and featured panel discussions and presentations on leadership, fiscal management, communications, public policy advocacy, practice, and more. DCY Assistant Director Jeff Van Deusen and association partners joined to share insights and resources. Thanks to all who participated!


Legislative Committee Meets

The Legislative Committee met on April 21 and received PCSAO policy and legislative updates, along with receiving bill analysis on various recently introduced bills. The committee also reviewed a summary of the HB96 budget bill that passed through the Ohio House and is headed over to the Ohio Senate. The committee next meets on May 19.

Ohio START seeks technical assistance consultant

PCSAO is seeking a part-time Ohio START Technical Assistance Consultant (15-20 hours/week). The Ohio START Technical Assistance Consultant works with PCSAO’s Ohio START Team to provide technical assistance to Ohio START counties on model implementation, sustainability and achieving model fidelity. This part-time consultant position requires the ability to work with diverse local START teams in different stages of implementation and successfully support their efforts. Learn more here.

Ohio START

Apply to join Ohio START Cohort 8

Ohio START is now accepting applications for Cohort 8. This opportunity is open to PCSAs interested in implementing the START model, which provides a team-based, family-centered approach to working with families affected by substance use disorder. Since 2017, Ohio START has expanded to 56 counties and served over 1,500 families. The model emphasizes collaboration between child welfare agencies and behavioral health providers, pairing caseworkers with family peer mentors to support parents in recovery while keeping children safe.


Applications are due May 2. Counties accepted into Cohort 8 will be notified by May 9. Participating PCSAs receive a base grant allocation, additional funding for each caseworker/peer mentor dyad, and ongoing support from the Ohio START team. Ohio START Leadership Council meets

The Ohio START Leadership Council met on April 23 and discussed several key updates, including the status of Cohort 8 applications, local dyad expansion, peer certification, and progress on county certifications. The council also reviewed strategic planning efforts for SFY26/27, fiscal updates, and new technical assistance resources. County teams shared local successes and challenges, helping to shape future priorities for Ohio START.


2025 Ohio START Summit registration closing soon

The 2025 Ohio START Summit will take place May 13-14 at Nationwide Hotel and Conference Center near Columbus. This event brings together more than 200 caseworkers, supervisors, behavioral health providers, and family peer mentors for networking and learning how best to serve Ohio's families struggling with co-occurring child maltreatment and substance use disorder. About this year's conference

The 2025 PCSAO Annual Conference, "45 Years of Impact: Celebrating Progress and Innovation," will take place Oct. 1-3 at the Hilton Columbus at Easton, inviting children services professionals from around Ohio for three days of learning, networking, and celebrating past accomplishments while looking ahead to the future. 12th Annual Trauma-Informed Care Summit

The Ohio Children’s Alliance, in partnership with the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, will host the 12th Annual Trauma-Informed Care Summit on May 21-22. This year’s event brings together professionals from HR, child welfare, behavioral health, education, first response, and workplace design to explore trauma-informed practices that support staff well-being and organizational culture. The OneOhio Recovery Foundation recently awarded more than $45 million in grants to organizations throughout Ohio, marking a milestone in our fight against the opioid epidemic.


April 24 – Proposed Head Start cut would impact over 3K area children - ‘Very scary’ – Dayton Daily News 

A program that provides early childhood education and child care arrangements for more than 27,000 Ohio children could see its funding eliminated if a Trump administration budget proposal moves forward.

The Lucas County Children Services task force, convened by the commissioners amid an outcry for public accountability after the death of Kei’mani Latigue, is now accepting applications from the public.


April 24 – Construction to begin on new Athens County Children's Services – The Post

After over 50 years, Athens County Children Services is on the road to building a new facility. Located at 18 Stonybrook Drive, their current campus of four buildings was constructed in 1972, and soon, two of those buildings will be demolished.

As the city heals from the death of 13-year-old Kei’mani Latigue, members of the community mourned the death of children like her on Thursday.

April 21 – Area counties team up for specialized foster program – Lima News

Child welfare agencies from Allen, Auglaize and Hardin counties are launching a multi-agency, tri-county Treatment Foster Care program. Allen County Children Services Executive Director Sarah Newland spoke at the Lima Rotary Club on Monday, explaining what the program means and what the public can expect moving forward.

April 18 Child Abuse Prevention Luncheon aims to bring awareness to the community The Times Leader

Belmont County Job and Family Services hosted its annual Child Abuse Prevention Luncheon at Undo’s West. The event comes on the heels of the Belmont County Board of Commissioners declaring April as Child Abuse Prevention Month. Belmont County Department of Job and Family Services Administrator Christine Parker said that the event is held every year to raise awareness about child abuse and neglect.
