April 13th Forum: Going with the Gut - The Hope and Hype of Gut Microbiota and PD
The human gastrointestinal system is lined with bacteria and other organisms, collectively the microbiota, that may have a significant impact on our health. In particular, recent investigations suggest that the microbiota may play a large role in Parkinson’s disease, either through worsening symptoms, impairing medication effect, or perhaps causing disease or speeding progression.

Dr. Ethan Brown will give an overview of what we know about the relationship between Parkinson’s disease and the gut microbiota, the limitations of experiments thus far, and future studies -- including an upcoming clinical trial at UCSF that may shed significant light on this complex relationship.

Dr. Brown is a Movement Disorders Neurologist at the University of California San Francisco and the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. He focuses on treatments including medical management, deep brain stimulation (DBS), and botulinum toxin injection. Dr. Brown received his medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College, and completed his residency in Neurology and a two-year fellowship in Movement Disorders at UCSF.

Rock Steady Boxing Albany has 2nd Anniversary
Rock Steady Boxing Albany (RSB) celebrated its 2nd Anniversary on March 8th. The program has grown from one coach, nine fighters and twelve classes a month to three coaches, sixty fighters and twenty-six classes a month.

Coach Daniel Burkhardt, acknowledged PD Active’s role in supporting RSB and recognized PD Active Board Member Judith Lubman for her leadership in establishing this RSB affiliate.

In attendance were three coaches and twenty-five fighters, all of whom are PD Active members, care partners, as well as, Coach Daniel’s parents, brother and grandparents. Fighters Lauren Livingston, Suzanne Calpestri and Evie Wozniak helped organize the celebration.
Benevity for Easy Workplace Giving
PD Active recently received a generous donation from a member through Benevity and this prompts us to share information about this workplace giving program. It is an easy way for partners, friends and family to help PD Active.

Benevity's platform is used by hundreds of enterprise companies. As a registered cause, PD Active is eligible to receive donations via workplace giving programs using Benevity -- some employers even offer matching gifts.

If you know your company uses Benevity, please look up PD Active and consider designating us as your cause. If you're not sure whether your company uses Benevity, contact HR to inquire. Even if your company doesn't use the Benevity platform, it may still have an employee donation program.
Mild/Moderate Care Partner Support Updates
Starting April 11th, the Mild/Moderate Care Partner Support Group will have a longer meeting time -- meeting from 3 to 5 p.m. every second Thursday. We are grateful to the Berkeley Chinese Community Church for granting the group additional time and allowing PD Active to use the space free of charge.

Mild/Moderate Care Partner Support now has a Google Group, allowing participants to more easily continue discussions and share resources outside of the monthly meetings. We think this online forum will be a great way for members to extend support to each other.
Lost and Found - These look familiar?
We have collected a couple of items at events over last year and want to get them back to the rightful owners. If either of these items looks familiar, please e-mail us at info@pdactive.org.

Note: the hat has the name Naomi inside and the glasses are +2.5 magnification.
Don't Forget to Carry Emergency Contact Info
Here is a handy guide for preparing emergency medical information. We urge all community members to prepare this information and keep it accessible and on your person at all times. Above all keep the name of the person to contact with your health care card.

If you have an iPhone you should fill out the   Health app that comes with the phone. This app can be used in emergency even if the phone is locked.

If you have an Android phone, here are   instructions for adding emergency info to your lock screen.
