Best of both worlds: In-person and Virtual

When the pandemic struck in Spring 2020, PD Active moved without delay or hesitation to provide all of our offerings online. As the threat of COVID subsides and our community is well vaccinated, we are selectively and cautiously introducing in-person options for some classes and programs.

To date, pickleball, walking groups, and Rock Steady Boxing offer opportunities for in-person get togethers. Beginning mid-August, Dance for PD® at BBT will be held in-person on Mondays. In October we will look forward to seeing each other for the PD Active Annual Picnic at Live Oak Park.

Tech Tips for People with Parkinson’s

Date: Tuesday, August 17

Time: 5:00 – 6:30pm PDT

PD Active, with the support of our iPhone expert Monique Does, will provide tips and answer your tech questions on how to use your smart phone (Apple or Android). Attendees are encouraged to ask or submit questions during the Round Table.

July Speaker Forum Recording

The July 10 Speaker Forum, Palliative Care and Parkinson's: A Total Health Approach presented by Dr. Maya Katz, provided great information and many excellent resources. If you missed the presentation, you can listen to the recording on our YouTube channel here.

PD Active Support Groups

In addition to our weekly classes, PD Active continues to coordinate and offer numerous virtual support groups for the community. Responses to our annual survey indicated that many people would like a hybrid version for meetings; some in-person and some virtual. At this point all the meetings are virtual but stay tuned for updates.

PD Support Group

Thursdays at 4:00pm - 5:30pm (PT)

Young Onset Support Group

Meeting every other week alternating between Wednesdays at 5:00pm PT (register here) and Fridays at 10:00am PT (register here). Please note that you need to register for each series separately, one on Wednesdays and one on Fridays.

Mild/Moderate Care Partner Support Group

Meeting 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month from 3:00pm - 5:00pm (PT)

Community Update

PD Active Outreach Program Funded by Community Grant from the Parkinson’s Foundation

PD Active is launching a program to expand our outreach activities to communities of color and underserved populations in the East Bay. The disparities in PD diagnosis, treatment and access to community resources are alarming and it is important that our organization be more reflective of the diversity of the Bay Area. The new program is supported by a community grant from the Parkinson’s Foundation.

Trial Study at UCSF

UCSF is conducting a trial, “Study in Parkinson Disease of Exercise Phase 3 Clinical Trial: SPARX3.”

The study will be testing the effects of moderate vs high intensity endurance treadmill exercise on disease progression. This is an exercise study for people with early Parkinson’s disease (PD) who are not yet on medications. The study is funded by the National Institutes of Health.
