In The News
Highlights from Town Hall
The third PD Active Town Hall meeting took place on Saturday, June 8 with about 50 community members in attendance.  The meeting opened with outgoing President Mary Pat Boersma turning over the meeting to incoming President Chad Zucker.

Chad thanked Mary Pat for her four years of dedicated leadership and her willingness to continue as a member of the PD Active Executive Committee.

Chad then reviewed highlights of the past year and introduced the new Board structure before asking attendees to complete the recently developed PD Active Survey. Following the survey each table engaged in focused discussion around topics such as what PD Active does well and what we can do to build on that.  Chad’s slides provide a more detailed outline of the meeting agenda and discussion topics.

The meeting ended with a note-taker from each table reporting on the discussion of their group. The board will review these notes and provide a summary of findings in the August newsletter.

Chad thanked members for their participation in the Town Hall and urged all to encourage other PD Active members to take the survey.
Local Voices at the National Parkinson’s Policy Forum
Congratulations to Nancy Husari and Brooke Deputy who have been selected to participate in the Parkinson’s Policy Forum to be held in Washington, D.C. September 9 and 10, 2019. Nancy and Brooke have demonstrated success in public policy work advocating for PD, most recently the successful campaign to establish April as Parkinson’s Awareness Month in Berkeley and Alameda. Take note, too, that Nancy and Brooke are constituents of Rep. Barbara Lee, a senior member of the powerful House Committee on Appropriations which controls the federal purse strings.

Stay tuned for a report on this important work in October. For more information, go to: http://www.parkinsonsforum.org/

Perspectives from the Recent World Parkinson Council
Numerous PD Active members attended the recent World Parkinson Congress in Kyoto, Japan -- several even performing. We're pleased to be able to share two post-event perspectives. Here are excerpts:

"This was a gathering that could be both deeply inspiring, bringing hope of a possible cure for Parkinson's, amazement at the dedication of so many individuals to the scientific research, and at times deeply frustrating."

~ Norm Frankel, PD Active Board Treasurer

"I returned to my pre-diagnosis travel rule: I prefer to travel with a friend, but if that’s not possible I will travel alone. I also knew that for half of the time, I would be at the congress, and that was the main purpose of the trip. What I hadn’t expected was that I would fall in love with Japan on my way to and from the WPC."

~ Nancy Husari, MJFF Ambassador

In Memory - Patricia R. Needle
Patricia R. Needle (1947-2019) passed away on June 7th, 2019 at home with her family in Hudson, MA. Patricia (Patty) had been an active member of our community, commuting from San Francisco to participate in Dance for PD ® and Tremolos classes. Friends from near and far have written touching words and said that she "lit up any room she entered." Her family requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to PD Active in her memory. We have thanked her family and are acknowledging the tributes.
Don't Forget to Carry Emergency Contact Info
Here is a handy guide for preparing emergency medical information. We urge all community members to prepare this information and keep it accessible and on your person at all times. Above all keep the name of the person to contact with your health care card.

If you have an iPhone you should fill out the   Health app that comes with the phone. This app can be used in emergency even if the phone is locked.

If you have an Android phone, here are   instructions for adding emergency info to your lock screen.
