Report: The Michael J. Fox Foundation Parkinson’s Policy Forum
|
|
This past March, 300 Parkinson's disease advocates from nearly all 50 states convened in Washington, D.C. for the 2018 Parkinson's Policy Forum. This annual event brings people with PD and their loved ones to our nation's capital for two days of education and training followed by a day of advocacy, action, and engagement.
This year's Forum was co-sponsored by the Parkinson's Foundation and the Michael J. Fox Foundation. Nine other PD organizations also contributed time and resources to help make the event possible.
PD Active community members Nancy Husari from Alameda and Brooke Deputy from Oakland were in attendance. They are bringing what they learned at the PD Forum to our local PD community. In addition, they are interested in forming a group to schedule face-to-face meetings at our Senators’ and Representatives’ local offices, and to brainstorm other ways to advocate for Parkinson’s funding.
about their experience at this year’s Forum on our blog and learn about the Forum’s three specific asks to lawmakers.

|
|
Come share, laugh and learn in the outdoors with PD Active’s new YOPD group. The next meet-up will be a hike in beautiful Joaquin Miller Park. The group will chat, share and commiserate for a while around a table. Then, all who are interested will hit the trails.
When: Fri Jun 1, 2018 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Meet at the picnic tables near the parking entrance. The tables are next to the large slice of a redwood tree. E-mail Chad Zucker at
yopd@pdactive.org
if you plan to attend so he knows who to expect.
Also, e-mail Chad if you cannot make this event, are not yet on the YOPD email list and were diagnosed with PD in your early fifties or younger and wish to stay informed on the group’s activities.

UCSF's 2018 Caregiver Program Series
|
|
The UCSF Parkinson's Disease Clinic and Research Center (PDCRC) has received a 2018 Parkinson's Foundation Community Grant to develop a series of 60 minute programs for caregivers of people with PD.
Aaron Daley, MA, is the clinical coordinator for the program. He has started to visit caregiver groups for PD in order to lead discussions and explore how this pilot program can be developed for wider distribution.
PDCRC have begun programs on the following topics:
- PD Progression and Uncertainties
- Hospitalization
- Medicare and Medicaid Issues
- Changes in Relationships and Intimacy
- Management of Cognitive Decline of a PD Patient
Other topics will follow, such as finding quality homecare and healthy practices for caregivers.
Mr. Daley came to a specially scheduled meeting of PD Active's Care Partners Support Group to lead a discussion on Management of Cognitive Decline. The conversation was animated and could easily have lasted longer than the 90 minutes scheduled. PDCRC hopes to ultimately make their slides available to organizations such as PD Active after the programs are refined. PD Active will keep all our members advised once the series is available.
To be put on the list when materials are available please e-mail Judith Lubman, the coordinating PD Active board member, at
development@pdactive.org.
