April 13th Forum: Going with the Gut - The Hope and Hype of Gut Microbiota and PD
The human gastrointestinal system is lined with bacteria and other organisms, collectively the microbiota, that may have a significant impact on our health. In particular, recent investigations suggest that the microbiota may play a large role in Parkinson’s disease, either through worsening symptoms, impairing medication effect, or perhaps causing disease or speeding progression.
Dr. Ethan Brown, a neurologist affiliated with UCSF Medical Center, will give an overview of what we know about the relationship between Parkinson’s disease and the gut microbiota, the limitations of experiments thus far, and future studies -- including an upcoming clinical trial at UCSF that may shed significant light on this complex relationship.
