Parkinson's Awareness Month - Berkeley and Alameda
April 2019 was officially proclaimed Parkinson's Awareness Month by both the City of Berkeley and the City of Alameda. We appreciate this effort to raise awareness about PD and hope this will be an annual initiative.

Many thanks to community members Brooke Deputy (left photo) and Nancy Husari (right photo with Alameda Mayor Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft).

April Forum Report - Dr. Ethan Brown
Dr. Ethan Brown from UCSF presented an engaging overview of what is known about the relationship between Parkinson’s disease and the gut microbiota. He described the limitations of experiments thus far, and explained the related upcoming clinical trial at UCSF that he is leading. Dr. Brown was kind enough to make the presentation slides available. Click here to download the slides (39 MB file).

If you're interested in learning more about Dr. Brown's clinical trial or applying to participate, you can find more information here and/or contact Danilo Romero at Danilo.romero@ucsf.edu.

The hall was packed and we thank everyone who attended and all the volunteers who helped. We were also pleased to be able to again offer John Vine's "A Parkinson's Primer." We will make the book available at the town hall in June.

Join Our Mentoring Program
The PD Active Mentoring Program is a volunteer peer-mentoring program in the East Bay. The program directors link recently diagnosed people (and care partners) with a trained volunteer mentor, who has a few years of experience with PD, to help better meet the challenges of the disease. Being a mentor involves a commitment to have three conversations with a newcomer over about three months.

If you are recently diagnosed and interested in participating or were diagnosed a few years ago or more and interested in becoming a mentor, please review the Mentoring Program Newcomer Guide for program details and to sign-up.

Don't Forget to Carry Emergency Contact Info
Here is a handy guide for preparing emergency medical information. We urge all community members to prepare this information and keep it accessible and on your person at all times. Above all keep the name of the person to contact with your health care card.

If you have an iPhone you should fill out the   Health app that comes with the phone. This app can be used in emergency even if the phone is locked.

If you have an Android phone, here are   instructions for adding emergency info to your lock screen.
