Based on the influential book by Jan Burkins and Kari Yates, this asynchronous online course offers a comprehensive exploration of the “six shifts” needed to embrace science and balance in the literacy classroom. Participants will learn about the common misunderstandings as well as recommendations within each shift. In addition, participants will make connections to the work within their classrooms and the Illinois Comprehensive Literacy Plan as they explore resources and teaching videos.


You do not have to purchase the book to register for this course.

The 2025 Kane County Institute Day is set for Friday, February 28 at the Q Center in St. Charles, and we need your expertise. The window for school staff to submit presentations is now open!


Do you have a topic that is relevant to current educational trends, research, or best practices? We are looking for presenters to lead breakout sessions that will provide educators with the latest, research-based information and/or strategies that can be used to improve or enhance instruction and student achievement.
