The 2023 CODA Awards (Collaboration of Design + Art) are taking place across the globe, with 100 mind-blowing international art installations in contention for prizes in numerous categories. Among the nominees is a massive multi-dimensional art piece titled “Unbound,” featuring hundreds of winged hearts escaping from a cage, flying overhead across an enormous multi-purpose room at the Napa State Hospital. The piece was developed and constructed by artist Tracy Ferron and a team of heart-building recruits, organized through her Petaluma nonprofit Life on Earth Art.
Through a simultaneous online voting effort, art fans from across the planet voted in CODA’s People’s Choice competition. The two top projects will receive the People’s Choice Award. Winners in all categories will be announced in September.

Petaluma has a celebration of the public art that makes it such a wonderful place to explore and show off.
The latest features eye-catching crows among bright pink blossoms, a piece by muralist Jonny Hirschmugl that was commissioned by Keller Street Cowork on the back of its building.
It seems every few weeks we have a new mural to celebrate here in Petaluma, such as Max Bala’s work at his alma mater McNear Elementary, the mural at the Petaluma Swim Center by MJ Lindo and Joshua Lawyer, David Best’s River Arch off Lakeville Highway.
When it comes to public art, we can count ourselves lucky. While other historic downtowns have shied away from anything that modernizes its look and feel, Petaluma has become a rich playground for artists to showcase their unique perspectives.

The proposal to build a new hotel at the corner of Petaluma Boulevard and B Street now comes paired with a second proposal: upping the height limits in Petaluma’s historic downtown district so that the six-story structure can be built there.
Both proposals were met with mixed reactions, including uncertainty and strong push-back, during the most recent public study session between the Petaluma Planning Commission and Historic & Cultural Preservation Committee. Commissioners, committee members, and community members voiced questions and concerns including whether a zoning change was appropriate, parking, and overall design.
The developers will meet with the community again next month and showcase new renderings and continuing our collaborations.

The City of Petaluma partnered with Petaluma People Services Center to bring our community the SAFE (Specialized Assistance for Everyone) Program in July of 2021. The goal of the SAFE team is to address crisis response, prevention, and intervention for our most vulnerable community members experiencing mental health issues, substance abuse issues, and homelessness. This mobile crisis response team approach provides more efficient and successful outcomes for crisis response, intervention, and treatment for the long-term improvement of our community and individual quality of life.
The SAFE Team are civilian first responders who will respond to & proactively address calls for service that have traditionally (and unnecessarily) burdened law enforcement, emergency medical services, and health care providers.
If you need the SAFE Team’s services, you may reach them via:
-
Call 911 – An emergency dispatcher will answer and determine if your situation requires the SAFE team, first responders such as police, fire, paramedics, or a combination of both.
-
Call 707.781.1234 – You will reach a directory where you can speak with a 911 operator or a non-emergency staff member to help.

A message from the County of Sonoma:
Want to find out about wildfires, floods, power shutoffs, and other emergencies as quickly as possible? The best way is to register with the emergency alert notification systems used by the City of Petaluma (Nixle), the County of Sonoma, and PG&E.
Be sure to register yourself and anyone else in your family (kids, elderly parents, etc) who would benefit from emergency notifications.
