Petaluma West Side Stories - December: Flashback

West Side Stories Petaluma believes that everyone has a story. Their goal? To give those stories a forum. After producing successful shows where stand-up comedians told their stories, former comic turned storyteller, Dave Pokorny sought to accommodate all those people who asked, “When can I tell my story?” And to encourage those people who doubted they had a story worth telling.

BID Committee Holiday Décor & Annual Assessment

Ever wonder how the seasonal decorations, art projects, and events in the downtown area are coordinated and funded? Much of it happens thanks to the annual BID assessments and volunteer efforts of business owners.

The annual BID assessment and yearly budget must be reviewed and approved by City

Council each year in a two-step process that includes a public hearing. The 2024 BID assessment items will be considered at City Council meetings on December 18 and early January.

The BID is a volunteer-led committee promoting the economic growth and resilience of businesses through marketing and beautification while maintaining the unique and authentic character of the Business Improvement District.

Turning Basin Dock Replacements

The Turning Basin Dredging & Dock Restoration is a 3-phase project designed to improve river access for the community, improve access and docking amenities for visiting boaters, and increase safety via a new fire suppression system.

The third and final phase of the project has now begun - the Turning Basin Dock Restoration. Work is expected to be completed in January 2024.

The City of Petaluma partnered with Petaluma People Services Center to bring our community the SAFE (Specialized Assistance for Everyone) Program in July of 2021. The goal of the SAFE team is to address crisis response, prevention, and intervention for our most vulnerable community members experiencing mental health issues, substance abuse issues, and homelessness. This mobile crisis response team approach provides more efficient and successful outcomes for crisis response, intervention, and treatment for the long-term improvement of our community and individual quality of life.

The SAFE Team are civilian first responders who will respond to & proactively address calls for service that have traditionally (and unnecessarily) burdened law enforcement, emergency medical services, and health care providers.

If you need the SAFE Team’s services, you may reach them via:

  • Call 911 – An emergency dispatcher will answer and determine if your situation requires the SAFE team, first responders such as police, fire, paramedics, or a combination of both.

  • Call 707.781.1234 – You will reach a directory where you can speak with a 911 operator or a non-emergency staff member to help.

A message from the County of Sonoma:

Want to find out about wildfires, floods, power shutoffs, and other emergencies as quickly as possible? The best way is to register with the emergency alert notification systems used by the City of Petaluma (Nixle), the County of Sonoma, and PG&E.

Be sure to register yourself and anyone else in your family (kids, elderly parents, etc) who would benefit from emergency notifications.
