Session Description:

The mysteries of innovation culture: If these ideas are so good... why are they so hard to implement?

The adoption of innovation methods and design thinking has left many companies with numerous ideas and ambition for creating change, but little in the way of implementation and measurable results. We conducted in-depth interviews with innovation leaders at over 50 companies in a variety of industries to understand the barriers that prevented "innovative" ideas from being implemented. We present the findings of this research, including best practices, as a means to help large companies and organizations get more value out of their design and innovation efforts.

Great Opportunities to Get Involved with the PDMA Research Foundation!
The PDMA Research Foundation is looking for volunteers to help with the next Comparative Performance Assessment Study (CPAS) research effort. We are looking for volunteers to serve as the Principal Investigator(s) and Steering Committee Members. The Foundation employs an experienced researcher who will do most of the heavy lifting.

These positions would include helping with the final selection of questions, assisting with the collection of data, participation in data analysis and the writing of papers. The typical duration of the project is 1 to 2 years. As we have expanded this study internationally it will include obtaining translations into several other languages.

It should be recognized by academics that this research will largely be applied and the data may not be suitable for publication in research journals. A commitment to new product development and its advancement is essential. A history of involvement in the PDMA is a good qualification.

In addition to the Principal Investigator(s) we are looking for members to join a CPAS Steering Committee to give input and guide this research and to lay the groundwork for continued research in this area.

Interested individuals should send a letter of interest and their CV to Steve Uban at [email protected] Please include in your letter why you want to engage in this research and revenue models you might have for the commercialization of this research.

Chapter Highlights: PDMA Minnesota
PDMA MN held a very nice event August 15 at the 3M Innovation Center. There were approximately 100 registered. The program included a tour and a presentation from members of various teams on innovation, technologies and product development at 3M. 3M was a fantastic host!
From PDMA Headquarters
I want to thank the PDMA Minnesota Chapter for inviting me to give a brief talk about PDMA prior to its event at the 3M Innovation Center on August 15. The chapter had strong participation and the presentations, tour and hospitality of 3M were fantastic.

Chapter development will be getting some extra focus later this fall. We have started by creating a resource section on the website for chapter leaders; September 10 marks the day we return to standing monthly meetings of chapter leaders. We have some wonderfully active chapters and international affiliates that continue to plan and host educational and networking events that bring together leading professionals in product development and management. These events complement well PDMA's other offerings. It is nice to witness firsthand the presentations, the hallway conversations, sharing and introductions. Our goal is to continue to support them as best we can and to help others start local chapters so more members can benefit from these in-person events.

We hope you are making plans to join hundreds of your colleagues in Chicago November 3-6 for Competitive Edge: Disrupting the Disruptors. Please note that the hotel reservation cut-off for our block of specially-priced rooms is October 4, so make your reservation now if you have not done so! Booking information is in the conference section on the website. The PDMA conference this year has an outstanding lineup of keynotes, workshops, TED-style talks and presentations from Outstanding Corporate Innovators (OCI) Award winners. This is a great place to sharpen your skills and network with colleagues on the forefront of the profession. We hope to see you there!

Best regards,
Eric Ewald, CAE
