Why Do Product Teams Excel? Want to Find Out? Take the survey. Get the results.
PDMA is partnering with Actuation Consulting on an invaluable product team performance survey.    Actuation Consulting has been   conducting a global study of product teams with the goal of improving our understanding of why some product teams excel - while others struggle.   They seek  to expand our growing knowledge of the factors that drive or influence the best outcomes and identified statistically significant elements that drive top performance. Not all factors carry the same weight and their regression analysis of findings enables them to present a weighted scale that helps organizations prioritize their activities more effectively.

The survey is unique in that, since its inception in 2012, it has received support from a constellation of leading industry associations and market players - groups that generally don't collaborate on such endeavors.  We are proud to partner with   Actuation   on this year's survey.  Help us make this year's survey the most successful ever!    Register to take the survey here:   http://eepurl.com/2pYiD

Participants who complete the survey receive complimentary access to the executive summary of findings and results, and are entered into the drawing for an Amazon gift card. Register to take the survey here.
PDMA Carolinas Chapter Announces Student Competition Winner

Enoch Chang, Team Leader, Student Competition Winner
Durham, NC. (November 2019) -The Carolinas Chapter of the Product Development and Management Association chose the Duke team as the winner of its Graduate Product Design and Development Competition at its annual  Innovate Carolina conference in Charlotte, NC. The award's sponsor,  industrial design firm, Trig , presented the team with a cash prize and mentoring support.

"The student competition was a great experience for me and the team," said Enoch Chang, Team Leader. "I am grateful for the opportunity to have presented our team's idea for both Innovate Carolina this April and the PDMA in November to large audiences at both conferences. Not only was I able to network with several professionals across industries from different countries, but I was also able to participate in engaging conversations about everything from how to further develop our idea to industry insights and career advice."

The students built a catheter-based device that could be used to enhance clinical outcomes of radical prostatectomies. Their device detects differences in urethral pressure based on adjacent organs to better localize the desired cut location. During their two-semester Medical Device Design course, taught by Duke BME's Eric Richardson and Mark Palmeri, the team developed this idea. The project was supported by Drs. Tom Plaskick and Ali Amansharifi, two physicians at the Duke University Medical Center, who identified the challenge of determining anatomic margins during radical prostatectomies. According to Palmeri, students detailed the clinical need, worked on design specifications to improve upon this location determination and then designed and prototyped a device to accurately detect the anatomical boundary. "The success of our students at these design competitions is a direct reflection of the investment that BME has made in expanding our resources for medical device design," says Palmeri.

Trig, the award sponsor, is a full-service industrial design firm serving the consumer, healthcare, and durable goods markets. Trig's comprehensive innovation process includes insights and ideation, product design, and brand asset management agency for start-ups, mid-sized, and Fortune 500 companies across the United States. Based in Chapel Hill, the Trig® product design consulting team can be found in Charlotte, Raleigh, and Richmond, Virginia.
The student team, led by Enoch Chang, went on to win the international student competition at the PDMA Annual Conference on Nov. 5, 2019 in Orlando, Florida. The PDMA Foundation, along with Conference Chair Ernie Harris and Student Award Chair Cheryl Jacobs presented the team with a cash prize and gave them a platform to present their product at the conference.
