Noting the Passing of David Wilemon, PDMA's Third President, on August 18, 2019
PDMA was founded in 1976 by three academics, Merle Crawford (University of Michigan), supported by Bob Rothberg (Rutgers University) and David Wilemon (Syracuse University). Each served successive terms as PDMA's president, with Dave serving the third term in 1980 along with being a director in 1978. All three were visionaries, seeing the need to support improvements in the management of new products cross-functionally rather than being represented as a special interest within organizations defined by business functions. Their goal was to create a professional home for champions of innovation, whether employed in industry, academia or consulting, and uniting their diverse perspectives to form a growing understanding of emerging practices that drive successful innovation management. The power of their early vision is demonstrated by PDMA's continuing success, with a growing international membership.

In PDMA's earliest years, Merle, Bob and Dave divided responsibilities to reach out to people who belonged to a number of different professional organizations. The first 100 PDMA members were university professors; however, many of these individuals had contacts with practitioners, either as former students or through various executive education programs. Thus, membership gradually extended to practitioners, including senior executives who saw the need to improve practices in their companies. The first annual PDMA conference was held in 1977, chaired by Dave Wilemon who served as PDMA's first Vice President of Conferences.

My memories of Dave are special ones. Dave and I met at that first conference, held at the Holiday Inn at O'Hare Airport in Chicago. A year later, when he was one of PDMA's directors, Dave asked me to be the chair of PDMA's third conference, held in Washington, D.C. at the Dupont Circle Hotel. He challenged me to 'think big,' and by using some other connections, I created a special half-day opening session that became the first public release and presentation of President Jimmy Carter's Domestic Policy Review on the State of Innovation in the United States of America. Frankly, without Dave's encouragement to "think big," this idea may never have occurred to me; however, it attracted attention that boosted attendance and PDMA membership.

A year later, when Dave asked me if I would become PDMA's fourth president (to serve in that role in 1981), I replied that I would only do so if the board would support my efforts to create what became The Journal of Product Innovation Management. With only a little delay, Dave called me to report that this would not be a problem. Dave was a true supporter of worthwhile endeavors and advised me, with others, throughout the subsequent 4-year process that led to a contract with our first publisher.

Dave's contribution to creating PDMA in 1976 has fueled many careers and improvements in untold practices. His modesty never permitted him to claim credit for the transformational impact he has had on so many lives. His encouragement certainly helped me achieve some of my own dreams. Thank you, Dave.

For further information see Dave's obituary.
