A Message From Allan Anderson, NPDP, 2017 Chair of PDMA
May I introduce 2017's first issue of Connections by saying how delighted I am to accept the position of PDMA Chair. I have long held PDMA in high regard and it is a real honor to now be leading the association.
My personal involvement with PDMA started in 2007 as a member of the establishment team for PDMA New Zealand. I have since held many roles in PDMA, serving as VP of International Affiliates and a member of the Outstanding Corporate Innovator (OCI) Award Committee. Most recently, I have led the revision of NPDP Certification and its launch into China.
As I have become increasingly involved with PDMA, I have come to value the association even more. Although I have been involved with product development all of my professional life, PDMA has provided me with the opportunity to expand my horizons of knowledge and extend my networks of contacts worldwide. I have also made many new friends as I have traveled to a number of countries representing the association.

January Book Review
Disrupt Yourself: Putting the Power of Disruptive Innovation to Work by Whitney Johnson. Review by Teresa Jurgens-Kowal, PhD, NPDP. Bibliomotion: New York, NY (2015). 162 + xxvi pages. US$24.95 (hardcover).

Whitney Johnson, a colleague of Clayton Christensen and a frequent contributor to Harvard Business Review, presents an introspective look at disruption in
Disrupt Yourself. This small book examines how we can apply innovation theory, like disruption and S-curves, to changing our personal and professional lives.
A foundational idea behind disruption is that incumbent firms fail to recognize game-changing opportunities because they are mired in the day-to-day management of existing products and services. Johnson extends this concept to personal situations. When individuals are considered at the peak of their career, they often remain in positions that fail to challenge them adequately. The reasons vary, but include finances, ego and fear. We may stay in a job that no longer provides growth opportunities just because it is familiar.
