Expert Briefing: Sights, Sounds and Parkinson's

As we grow older, it is normal to experience age-related vision and hearing changes. However, for people with Parkinson’s disease (PD), difficulties related to the eyes and vision as well as hearing loss often progress alongside other PD symptoms. Learn more about how changes in vision, hearing as well as other senses including taste and smell impact people with Parkinson’s and how to cope with these changes.

In this program, Joseph Quinn, MD, a neurologist who specializes in dementia and cognitive decline in Parkinson’s, will explore what we know about how to predict and prevent decline - and what’s on the horizon that will help scientists and doctors better stop cognitive decline before its onset.

Advance care planning can be a gift you give yourself and your family. It is a way to ensure that your wishes and preferences are consistent with the choices of care you receive now and in the future.
Please join us for our virtual Advance Care Planning Series.
Each session will feature experts in the medical and legal fields discussing financial, legal and long-term care questions. There will be a live Q&A at the end of each session.

Parkinson’s 101: Intro to Parkinson’s Workshop
|
An introduction to Parkinson’s disease, including diagnosis, common motor and non-motor symptoms, treatment and interventions. After a presentation, you will have the chance to ask your questions!

APDA PATIENT AID SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
The APDA Midwest Chapter offers a patient aid scholarship program designed to provide financial support to people with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and their families. Approved applicants will be eligible to be granted a $500 one-time payment per calendar year (January-December). Funds are limited and will be awarded on a first-come basis. This Patient Aid Scholarship Program is intended for individuals with PD in need of financial assistance for programs, services, and/or activities.

Social Engagement: Drumming Up Health in the Parkinson's Community
|
Trained facilitators from Cincinnati Music & Wellness Coalition will guide participants in an interactive drumming program that fosters creativity and social engagement. Session elements include breathing, movement, music, and bodily awareness. This evidenced-based program was developed by Barry Bittman, MD, a neurologist and pioneer in mind-body medicine. No previous musical experience or drums, are necessary (you can drum with your hands on any hard surface).

Shirley Ryan AbilityLab
Employment and Parkinson's Peer Support Group
Date: The Group meets twice per month, on the second and fourth Fridays of each month at 4-5pm EST (3pm CST, 2pm MST, 1pm PST).
Location: This is a virtual/online group. Once registered you will be given information to join the group.
Cost: Free
The purpose of the “Parkinson’s Works” Peer Support Group is to develop a sense of community among people with Parkinson’s who may share similar experiences in the workplace or job-searching process. Group activities may include discussing decisions related to disclosing one’s diagnosis, navigating Parkinson’s symptoms in the workplace, formal and informal job accommodations, job crafting, job search strategies, mock-interviews, and reviewing resumes. The group is also intended to provide a supportive social-emotional environment in which participants may discuss their experiences and coping strategies for working with Parkinson’s. This group is moderated by a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor who specializes in Vocational Rehabilitation at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. Anyone in the United States with Parkinson’s disease who is currently working or looking for work can participate. The group is conducted via a confidential web-based videoconference platform.
