PEEK at the Week: April 23
Here is an excerpt from a 1999 Cocheco Arts Festival newsletter created by the Dover Chamber. Highlighted is B.J. Hickman, a Garrison City based magician who has performed at Cocheco Arts Festival for an astonishing 45 years.
This is the actual quote in the newsletter from over two decades ago: "Magician B.J. Hickman has entertained children of all ages throughout New England for more than 30 years. Hickman's polished style is that of a traditional magician. Combine that with his friendly, comfortable rapport with the audience and the result is a performance that leaves the audience spellbound. 'The magic happens and people are left with a sense of wonder but in a lighthearted, entertaining way,' Hickman says. 'I make sure everyone has fun and they know that I do too.'"

For more historical content, check out the Chamber's Instagram and Facebook . Peek into the Past is a special section running in PEEK this year to signify the 100th anniversary of the Chamber.

Local Media Matters

During these difficult times the long-term viability of our local media is at risk. Now more than ever we need local journalists keeping Seacoast area residents informed about stories affecting the Seacoast of New Hampshire.
People are consuming more online news than ever before. Despite this, all of our media outlets--radio, print, broadcast--have experienced significant decreases in advertising spending.
Local businesses rely on their announcements being published and national publications turn to solid local journalism for stories to keep the public informed. Nothing can take the place of on-the-ground reporting of facts.
Senator Jeanne Shaheen also expressed her desire to support local media in an April 8 media release. She was one of a number of senators who called on Senate leadership to include funding to support local journalism and media in future COVID-19 relief packages. You can read the media release and letter  here
We know we are in unusual, hard times. Our media resources are depending now more than ever on digital subscriptions and can use your help. If you can, please help our local community by supporting our local media organizations.
Beware of COVID-19 Scams

It’s important to protect yourself and others from scammers taking advantage of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Many scammers call claiming to be representatives of the IRS or the Social Security Administration and request personal information. Federal agencies will not request personal information over the phone and you should hang up immediately if you receive such a call.

The New Hampshire Department of Justice has set up a  website  with important guidance and helpful information to protect the public and learn how you can avoid falling victim. to scammers. If you believe you’ve been the target of a scam, you can call the Consumer Protection Hotline at (888) 468-4454 or email .
