Kids on the Block Puppet Skits Educate Students

Kids on the Block is a wonderful and enriching program under the umbrella of our Prevention Department which presents assemblies in local schools to teach children how to stay safe. The assemblies are presented as puppet skits by skilled puppeteers using the "hand and rod" method, a style that originated in the Japanese Bunraku puppet theatre. Topics of the Kids on the Block assemblies include physical and sexual abuse, differences and disabilities, and bullying.

In 2014, the Kids on the Block program was presented in 36 schools throughout Mercer County. Ethnically diverse, child-size puppets are used in the program skits to illustrate common situations that the students may be facing, allowing them to engage and ask questions in a comfortable atmosphere. Younger students often ask the puppets sensitive questions that may be too intimidating to ask a "real" person.

Our Prevention Programs have been so effective that some students have been able to immediately recognize that they themselves were in unsafe situations. In fact, last year we had 12 cases of reportable disclosures of abuse from students who attended our workshops. "Students were able to find a comfort zone in which they could express their concerns. Educating these students on safety issues is a key aspect of prevention," says Melody Powell, PEI Kids' Director of Prevention. Thank You for Supporting our Holiday Appeal

We would like to thank everyone who donated to our Annual Holiday Appeal this season. Thanks to your thoughtful support we raised over $17,000 for our prevention, education and intervention programs aimed at keeping children safe in Mercer County.

Last year, our prevention workshops reached more than 13,000 students, teachers, and parents in every Mercer County municipality. We also provided free, professional counseling to more than 250 child victims of sexual abuse and helped more the 120 at-risk teens learn to manage anger, increase their respect for authority, avoid gang involvement, and make positive life choices. Additionally, we continued our work as the lead agency of the Greater Mercer Coalition to Prevent Child Sexual Abuse, supporting more than 25 community organizations in their efforts to educate over 1,000 adults about how to prevent, recognize, and respond to child sexual abuse.

Your support allows us to further our mission of promoting and maintaining a safe environment for all children. We couldn't do it without you! For more information about our programs and services please visit PEIKids.org.
