Program Spotlight: Child Assault Prevention (CAP) Bullying Prevention Program to be Implemented in 3 Local Elementary Schools

Over the next several months, the PEI Kids prevention team will be implementing the CAP Bullying Prevention Program (CBPP) in three Hamilton Township elementary schools. Developed by the NJ Child Assault Prevention Project, the program was first introduced

in 1999; since that time over 150,000 students throughout the state have participated. This innovative program, designed for kindergarten to 8th grade, offers a comprehensive approach to the problem of bullying in schools. The entire school community works together in order to bring about a systemic cultural change within the school. Klockner, Sayen and Sunnybrae Elementary schools are enthusiastically participating in the CBPP for the first time this year. Taking a whole school approach to combat bullying behaviors, PEI Kid's prevention specialists will present workshops to staff, parents and students; they will be working in conjunction with the schools' safety teams to discuss the unique needs of the school community. The student workshops are designed to teach children about the problems and consequences of bullying for all members of their community, not just the victims. Students' opinions on bullying behaviors and attitudes will be gathered as part of the feedback critical to determining community response. Students will discuss their perceptions of bullying and create a list of suggestions for decreasing bullying for school administration.

CAP's Bullying Prevention Program seeks to mobilize the school to

* raise awareness and identify types of bullying and harassment;
* encourage anti-bully/harassment policies;
* train adults in appropriate intervention strategies; and
* improve student communication, conflict resolution, problem solving and other social skills
