CJOOS Participants Visit Island Beach State Park

On Wednesday, June 4, 2014, participants from PEI Kids' Comprehensive Juvenile Offender Outreach Services (CJOOS) program spent the day at Island Beach State Park and Nature Preserve in Seaside Park, NJ.

The CJOOS program helps juvenile offenders on probation for auto, assault or entry-level offenses become less of a danger to themselves and the community. Program participants, aged 11 to 17 -- 90% of whom are already gang-involved -- receive violence prevention and conflict resolution skills development, gang culture education, tolerance and critical thinking skills, and training in respect for authority.

Despite living an hour from the beach, four of the 15 program participants attending this day trip had never seen the ocean before. PEI Kids' Juvenile Intervention Services Department Coordinator Rob Fiorello commented that he felt very fortunate to be able to facilitate this first time experience for the youth.

This CJOOS trip follows a series of educational field trips within the program that are made possible by support from the County of Mercer, Department of Human Services; the Office of Faith Based Initiatives (OFBI), Department of State; City of Trenton Community Development Block Grant; Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc.; and the Church and Dwight Employee Giving Fund.

CAP Program Presents for Sayen School at Megan's Place

On Friday, June 6, 2014, PEI Kids' Child Assault Prevention (CAP) team presented the Kids on the Block program to children at Megan's Place. The "No More Bullies" workshop was presented to students of Sayen School in Hamilton Township.

A public memorial opened in 1995, Megan's Place was funded by The Robbinsville-Hamilton Rotary Club to commemorate Megan Kanka, who was raped and murdered by a neighbor. This tragedy inspired the introduction of "Megan's Law," which requires local law enforcement to make information regarding sex offenders available to the public. Megan's Place is located on the land previously occupied by Megan's assailant.

Through this workshop, approximately 50 fifth graders learned about disabilities, such as spina bifida and visual impairment; medical differences, such as childhood cancer and HIV/AIDS; educational differences, including learning disabilities and ADHD; and social concerns including sexual abuse prevention and alternatives to violence.
