Happy November!
Let the Holiday season begin... and to kick things off this week, we're focusing this week on Bourgogne Rouge! Refreshing, and balanced across your senses - the perfect Autumn vin rouge as the weather starts to cool off.
| |
Burgundy is one of the world’s greatest and most prestigious wine regions. Surprisingly, this iconic area for oenophiles represents just 3% of production in France. Coupling the limited supply with the INCREDIBLE demand for Burgundy makes this the hottest category in the wine world today.
The distance from Dijon at the north, to the Maconais in the south, is just about 75 miles, with the narrow width being under a mile in some areas. This is the golden slope.
The area of Chablis (an island to the north), is geographically on edge, and about halfway between Beaune and Paris.

Our $28 Bourgogne Rouge Tasting Flight starts with a vieilles-vignes (old vine) example that's elegant and well-structured. Next up, a 2022 Côtes de Beaune that's a great preview of what to expect from the generous '22 vintage; fresh red-fruit and gentle tannins. Then we head to Domaine Matrot with red Burg loaded with cranberry and lingers on the finish. The flight finishes with our gold-standard of Bourgogne-level rouge and a house favorite from Domaine Christian Clerget (which you might recall from a brilliant winemaker dinner back in mid-2022 and a perennial visit on our annual France trip).
These four selections will help you better understand your palate, and expand your senses as to how each domaine has their own signature style based on the vintage and climats of the region. What a fun way to learn and sip the quintessential vin de Bourgogne!
Read on for a brief history of Burgundy, detailed information about the flight wines, and our tasting room hours at both South End & Park Road store locations.
This is my favorite region - you know that. So it's a flight not to be missed y'all!
Come see us this week, and please see below for a special opportunity to meet Karoline Walch (5th generation winemaker) from the Alto Adige in northern Italy early next week!

Brief History of Burgundy
- Millions of years ago, Burgundy was covered by a sea, which created its limestone and marl soils. This soil composition is responsible for creating the coveted minerality of Burgundian wines.
- The wine history in Burgundy dates back to around 50 BC. It’s believed that the Celts were producing wine in Burgundy when conquered by the Romans. The Romans picked up where the Celts left off, but after the fall of the Roman Empire, it was the Catholic church that took over the wine-making duties.
- Around 900, Benedictine monks owned and worked much of the region’s land, but it was the Cistercian monks that elevated the art of Burgundian wines some 200 years later.
- In 1336, Cistercians created the first enclosed Burgundian vineyard {Clos Vougeot}, which is still producing wine.
- The Dukes of Burgundy ruled the region in the 14th and 15th centuries. The Pinot Noir wine was so beloved that Duke Phillipe outlawed the growing of Gamay grapes in 1395.
- In the late 15th century, Burgundy became part of France, which was still a monarchy.
- After the French Revolution, the church’s land was confiscated and auctioned off to private owners.
- Over several generations, the land was divided multiple times due to Napoleonic Code. This law required that inheritances be divided equally among each child.
- Today, it’s not uncommon for a chateau to have dozens of owners, with only a few rows each.
