PETIT WEEK IN WINE | May 22nd - May 26th 2024

TASTING FLIGHT FEATURING:

Memorial Day weekend unofficially marks the beginning of Summer, with cookouts, outdoor fun with family and long road trips to the mountains and the beach. Even more importantly, it's a weekend to reflect upon the lives of those who died in defense of this great country.

So whether you're chilling on the porch or heading out of town for the holiday, stop in for all your fine wine desires! Shop and taste as we're featuring a few of our favorite producers and labels from California & Oregon.

Our All-American flight is composed of crowd-pleasers that are incredibly food-friendly for all your entertaining needs - starting with a delicious Vermentino from Napa Valley pioneers Steve & Jill Matthiasson. The tasting continues with three reds, building in gravitas from classic Willamette Valley Oregon Pinot Noir to Carignan from Mendocino. The flight finishes with Tony Biagi's HGIII Red Blend from Hourglass Estate in Calistoga. This week's picks provide a little something special for everyone, including two fantastic varietals (Vermentino & Carignan) that are seldom seen stateside.

The $25 Tasting Flight kicks off tonight (Wednesday), just in time to taste and pickup your favorites before the long weekend. And if you are staying in Charlotte, we look forward to welcoming you through Sunday to reload and enjoy for your Memorial Day festivities. We're closed Monday.

Wishing everyone a Memorial Day weekend filled with reflection and appreciation for those who have served.

Cheers!

Mark

MATTHIASSON

'Cressida Vineyard' Vermentino 2022

Los Carneros, CA

$42 btl/retail

Inspired by the Mediterranean whites that Jill & Steve Matthiasson enjoy, this Vermentino is a broad powerful expression that will make you feel the salt spray of the ocean. A refreshing and lip-smacking delicious summer white from a varietal seldom cultivated in CA.

Varietal: 100% Vermentino from Cressida vineyard in Los Carneros which receives the perfect balance of warm sun and cooling Bay winds, straight off the Pacific and through the Golden Gate. The soils are shale from an ancient inland sea — the vineyard is the foot of the Mayacamas.

Tasting Notes: Besides the gorgeous texture, you will find richer fruit flavors like dates or figs, even papaya, along with lifting herbal notes such as tarragon or chervil. All of this is carried by a broad structure that lingers onto a bright finish.

ET FILLE WINERY

Pinot Noir 2021

Willamette Valley, OR

$42 btl/retail

The Mozeico family has a 30+ year history in the Willamette Valley making wine - starting as a hobby with Howard in the 1980s. With a mission to make authentic, complex, and balanced wine, Et Fille leads the way in Oregon with dedication and focus.

Varietal: 100% Pinot Noir (clones: Pommard, Wädenswil, Dijon Clone 777) from 3 AVAs (Dundee Hills, Yamhill-Carlton, and Eola-Amity Hills). Aged for 11 months in 13% new French oak barrel.

Tasting Notes:  Expressive and delicate wine that is sure to become a reliable staple. Opulent aroma of plum and raspberry with a hint of vanilla is followed by a palate of cherry and sasparilla. The balanced and energetic texture is punctuated by refreshing acidity that follows to the long and sweet finish.

DOGWOOD & THISTLE

‘Testa Vineyard’ Carignan 2021

Mendocino County, CA

$32 btl/retail

From the second any visitor sets foot on the Testa vineyard, they know they are in a very special place. The Testa family has been farming this land in Comptche, California since 1912... and there is no denying the lightness and brightness of the fruit is what gives this Carignan its vivacity.

Varietal: 100% Carignan.

Tasting Notes: This wine is a rich garnet color and opens with a perfumed nose of smashed blueberries, earth and cigar box. There is a medium body with bright, jammy fruit when the wine enters your mouth, which unfolds into a nice weight on the palate, leading into darker, plummy fruit notes and some nice pepper. The finish lingers and leaves you wanting more.

HOURGLASS

"HGIII" Proprietary Red Blend 2022

Napa Valley, CA

$55 btl/retail

Winemaker Tony Biagi's HGIII is Hourglass' glorious blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petite Sirah. The 2022 vintage shines with Merlot commanding attention and delivering unmatched expressiveness.

Varietal: Composed primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, with a small addition of Syrah. The grapes are carefully selected, sorted, and then fermented in small lots. The wine is aged in French oak barrels for 20 months.

Tasting Notes: Aromas of red and black currants intertwine seamlessly with lavender and herbes de Provence, creating a floral interplay. On the palate, dark sour cherry and inky black cassis take the spotlight, supported by supple tannins and vibrant acidity. Subtle notes of light roasted coffee, plum, wild strawberry, and fennel add layers of complexity. The careful blend of 50% new and seasoned barrels ensures freshness while imparting barrel spice and structure, resulting in a wine of power, elegance and lasting impression.
