PETIT WEEK IN WINE | October 18th - October 22nd 2023

TASTING FLIGHT FEATURING:

Napa Valley's Spring Mountain AVA

Spring Mountain District is located west of St. Helena in Napa Valley, California, on the eastern slopes of the Mayacamas Range that separates Napa Valley and the Sonoma Valley. It lies approximately 30 miles east of the Pacific Ocean and 25 miles north of San Pablo Bay. The steep terrain of this region is primarily made up of eastern facing slopes with good drainage and elevation ranging from 400 to 2600 feet above sea level.

We've crossed the Finish Line... Our New Flagship Store at 4001 Park Rd is ready to welcome you THIS WEEKEND!

We're thrilled to announce the grand opening of our new flagship store this Saturday, October 21st! Join us for a spectacular Tasting Flight featuring the hidden gem of Napa Valley— the Spring Mountain District AVA!

The Spring Mountain District AVA is known for its elegant and age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignons. But this picturesque region offers much more, boasting a diverse range of varietals, from Chardonnay and Riesling to Pinot Noir and Merlot, thanks to its unique topography and microclimates.

Our $35 exclusive Spring Mountain AVA Tasting Flight will take you on a varietal journey starting with the acclaimed Riesling from Smith-Madrone Winery. Following that, indulge in a classic hillside Chardonnay from Keenan—a crowd favorite from last week's Wine Dinner at Limani. The flight continues with a mountain Merlot from Paloma Vineyards, honored with numerous accolades (including the 2003 WS Wine of the Year). Lastly, savor a Cabernet Sauvignon brimming with rich, pure black fruit flavors and a refined, earthy minerality.

This curated selection showcases the dedication and passion of the winemakers who navigate the challenging terrain of Spring Mountain District, with some vineyards situated on 35-degree slopes!

Spring Mountain AVA Facts

  • The area where the modern appellation of Spring Mountain District is located was originally called "Sierras de Suscol" or "Suscol Hills", by the Spanish. Then in 1841 became part of the Rancho Carne Humana land grant, which was given to Dr. Edward Turner Bale by General Mariano Vallejo as payment for his services as "Surgeon-in-Chief of the Mexican Army." When Dr. Bale died in 1849, his family started to sell off portions of the vast land grant.
  • The name Spring Mountain does not refer to a specific peak or mountain, but refers to the general highland region west of St. Helena, historically blessed with numerous springs. The town of St. Helena utilized reservoirs located in this area as its primary source of drinking water up until the late 1920's.
  • The first documented grape grower in the region was Charles Lemme, who established the La Perla Vineyard, south of York Creek, in 1874. By 1880 he was producing 13,000 gallons annually. Other early pioneering winemakers soon followed, including the Beringer Brothers in the 1880's and Tiburcio Parrott (a SF Banker) who established the Miravalle vineyard and whose wines took first place at the San Francisco Midwinter Fair of 1894 and a gold medal at the World's Fair in 1896.
  • The AVA was established in 1993.
  • Spring Mountain soils are an equal mix of sedimentary and volcanic rocky soils.
  • Spring Mountain District AVA is 8,600 acres with about 1,000 acres planted.

Join us this weekend for our Spring Mountain AVA Tasting Flight showcasing the varietal breadth and winemaking expertise found on the eastern slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains above St. Helena.

Smith Madrone

Riesling 2018

Spring Mountain AVA, Napa Valley, CA

$41 btl/retail

VARIETAL: 100% Riesling  from mountain grown grapes, honoring the international tradition of Riesling which thrives on steep hillsides.

TASTING NOTES: Aromatically, the wine opens with Meyer lemons, pomelo, orange flowers, and just a dab of mandarin orange hiding shyly behind a rose bush. This is all backed up with a solid dose of minerality. On the palate the wine is racy and beautifully balanced with a backbone of juicy fruit acidity. Wonderfully stylish and delicious and built to last.

Keenan

Chardonnay 2018

Spring Mountain AVA, Napa Valley, CA

$49 btl/retail

VARIETAL:  100% Chardonnay from vines planted in 1995, close enough to underground springs that they provide an abundant crop without irrigation. The juice was fermented and aged in French and American oak barrels.

TASTING NOTES:  Offers a pretty bouquet of bright citrus, tangerine, and orange blossom to go with a medium-bodied, racy style on the palate. With plenty of acidity, good ripeness of fruit, and a great finish, it's going to keep for a solid 7-8 years.

Paloma Vineyard

Merlot 2018

Spring Mountain AVA, Napa Valley, CA

$88 btl/retail

VARIETAL: A blend of Merlot (86%) with a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon (14%). It is fermented in French oak—33% new—for 18 months before being bottled in the spring, then bottle-aged for an additional 30 months before release.

TASTING NOTES:  In the glass, the color exhibits deep garnet tones. On the nose, you're greeted with notes of violet, dark fruit, black licorice, and pepper. On the palate, you'll note signs of hearty ripe plums, black olives, anise, and a finish of rich, dark chocolate.

Spring Mountain Vineyards

Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Spring Mountain AVA, Napa Valley, CA

$95 btl/retail

VARIETAL: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from estate owned vineyards within Spring Mountain.

TASTING NOTES: Opens with aromas of dusty cedar and sage. Notes of dark cherry, sassafras, and fresh fig on the nose compliment floral notes of lavender and violets. Brambly red fruit layered with tobacco, bay leaf, and cassis round out the expressive bouquet. On the palate bright red and blue fruits of cherry and boysenberry burst from the glass. This bright fruit evolves into darker notes of brambly blackberry and black plum all layered with savory flavors of olives and sage. The fruit is balanced with toasty oak and a powerful tannin structure.
