PETIT WEEK IN WINE | October 12th - October 15th 2023 | |
WHITE BURGUNDY
Everyone's new & old love!
| |
Last year at this time in October, I was packing my luggage for our annual Burgundy & Champagne Client Trip... wow, time flies when you are having fun!
In 2023 we took a break from the trip (don't worry, we will be back!) as we planned the behemoth project of opening of our NEW Flagship Store at 4001 Park Road. Moreover, with yields substantially down from the 2021 vintage (cellars have literally been empty, so not much barrel tasting to be had...)
So to celebrate the anniversary of our annual pilgramage that has become our Burgundy & Champagne client trip, we are excited to showcase WHITE BURGUNDY wines exclusively this week!
In the Burgundy region, the perfect combination of climate, land, and tradition produce wines that are coveted by many and never precisely replicated anywhere else. This is exactly the case with the four white Burgs we are featuring this week.
Our $25 Tasting Flight starts with a delightful Crèmant de Bourgogne sparkling wine, and a crisp and balanced Chablis from one of our favorite producers - Marcel Servin (also always on our visit through Chablis). The next two wines feature one of the gold-standards of Bourgogne Blanc, and last but not least, a more full-body example from Pouilly-Fuissé.
It's an awesome lineup. Great value, variety, and meticulous winemaking are all on full display this week at Petit Philippe - we hope you stop by & visit.
Please read on for a brief overview on White Burgundy, more information on the flight wines, and our tasting room hours.
Lastly, see below for our Grand Opening Gala announcement, and a quick video on the last few updates on Park Rd, featuring our NEW LaCave subterranean location at 4001 Park Rd.
We will see you soon!
With much gratitude,
Cheers,
Mark

White Burgundy
THE HISTORY OF CHARDONNAY:
Chardonnay has a long history in France. It is believed that this variety was first grown in Burgundy in the Middle Ages. The monks of the Abbey of Cîteaux, in Burgundy, helped spread the cultivation of Chardonnay in the region.
CREMANT DE BOURGOGNE:
An appellation as well as the name for the sparkling wines produced there, Crémant de Bourgogne is Burgundy’s answer to Champagne. Like Champagne, it is made in the laborious traditional method, methode traditionelle, and the dominant grapes are Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, although a bit of Aligoté, Gamay or Pinot Blanc may sometimes be added for good measure. Also like Champagne, various styles abound for any palate predilection: sparkling rosé, Blanc de Blancs from Chardonnay, Aligoté or Pinot Blanc; or Blanc de Noirs made with Gamay and Pinot Noir.
CHABLIS:
A Chardonnay making wine region in the northwest corner of Burgundy, France. Unlike other Chardonnay wines, Chablis rarely uses oak-aging, resulting in a very different style and taste profile. It’s because of Chablis’ renown that the unoaked Chardonnay style is popular worldwide.
BOURGOGNE BLANC:
A title covering still white wines produced under the regional Bourgogne appellation, in the Burgundy region of central eastern France. Created in 1937, the broad Bourgogne title covers those Burgundy wines produced in areas not covered by more location-specific appellations.
POUILLY-FUISSE:
Pouilly-Fuissé is the home of the finest white wines of southern Burgundy's Maconnais district. They are produced exclusively from Chardonnay grapes grown in the communes of Chaintré, Fuissé, Solutré-Pouilly and Vergisson.
