Coach's Corner . . . Training Over the Holidays
We have come a long way as a team in a very short time. Our membership has really stepped up by getting swimmers to practice, consistently, and going to meets on a regular basis so that they can learn from mistakes and successes.
We are starting to do the things we need to do to be a competitive team. Can we take it to the next level? Are we ready for that? What level does your athlete want to reach? What are you willing to sacrifice in order to make that happen? Olympians don’t become Olympians without A LOT of sacrifice.
First, let me say family time is one of the most important things in life. Swimming is a sport that requires you to train consistently if you want to get the results that you want. I think we had more athletes over the break than we did last year. Thank you for that.
If you did not train over the break, you may want to reset expectations for December, especially if your champs meet, including high school, is in the next 2 weeks. This is not negativity, this is being aware based on my years of experience. We still need to go in with a positive mind set, however, understand the time off may affect your performance.
There are options if you do want to train while traveling over the holidays.
- Find another USA swimming team through USA swimming and ask if your
athlete can join over the break. You must start this process a few weeks before. They will need times so they can assign the correct training group.
- Contact me and I will find a team for you. Once again, I need a few weeks.
- Let me know and I can email the workouts if you can find a pool to train in when you can.
It’s very hard to train alone and hard on families that are visiting loved ones. If you can train for 30-45 minutes, great. If you can go for an hour this day, 30 minutes that day and so on, It is so much better than not getting in the water at all. I have had the opportunity to coach some high-level kids, and they ALWAYS trained when they went out of town. Athletes and parents made the choice. This is a mentality and why some of those athletes swam for LSU, UT, A & M and Northwestern. Parents and athletes were willing to do what others were not.
Feel free to reach out if you have any questions. If you are traveling over the holidays and want a team to train with, reach out.
Thank you for being a part of PFL Aquatics!
