It was Christmas morning, I was 8 or 9 years old and I was enthralled as I unwrapped a gift from Santa. As I opened that package, my mom distracted me while my dad quietly slipped away. He returned without me knowing it, and when I spun around to look at him, there he was with a brand-new set of golf clubs! Having used “hand-me-downs” my first two summers, this was my first real set and I was ecstatic! My new clubs—manufactured by Ram—were a typical starter set, but I didn’t care. I couldn’t wait for the cold and snow to disappear so I could sling my new bag and clubs over my back and pedal my bicycle over to the local park district course across town. Golf—not ice hockey—I could play forever.

Delaware has many terrific courses, and we are fortunate to play host to one of the most prestigious professional events in 2022! The PGA Tour has announced the official dates for the 2022 BMW Championship to be played at the Wilmington Country Club. The top 70 golfers in the world will make their way to Delaware the week of August 16 - 21, 2022.
The response to corporate hospitality offerings for the tournament has been very strong with more than half of the available spots already booked. Professional sporting events of this magnitude often attract unaffiliated sales campaigns offering off-site hospitality packages. Local businesses should be aware that if you want to be sure to experience the full, on-course atmosphere and hospitality of the BMW Championship, be careful to only work with the BMW sales team. This will also ensure that all proceeds are directed to support the tournament beneficiary, the Evans Scholars Foundation, which currently supports full tuition and housing scholarships to over a thousand students. If you have any questions or wish to reserve your place, contact Michael Vaughan at (224) 260-3790, vaughan@wgaesf.org.

The Legend of Porky Oliver
Many Delawareans are familiar with the Ed Oliver Golf Club in Wilmington, but few know about the club’s namesake. Fewer still are aware of the former Wilmington Country Club caddie’s connection to the BMW Championship, the prestigious PGA
Tour event set to visit Wilmington in August 2022.
As the third-oldest event on the PGA TOUR schedule, the BMW Championship dates back to 1899 when it debuted as the Western Open. That’s what it was called in 1941 when, only weeks before the World War II draft pulled 25-year old Ed “Porky” Oliver into the Army, the Wilmington native beat Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson at Phoenix Country Club in Phoenix, Arizona, for the title.
