CANADIAN GOLFEXPO WELCOMING CONTENT FOR TEACHING STAGE
The NGCOA Canada will be conducting the Canadian GOLFEXPO nationwide from Feb. 28 to March 6 and the PGA of BC is once again calling upon member Professionals to provide content for the event's Virtual Teaching Stage.

The online event will feature five individual, regional shows, including the Western GOLFEXPO covering BC and Alberta where Virtual Teaching Stage content will be made available for thousands of anticipated attendees. All PGA of BC Professionals are invited to submit videos of lessons, tips and tricks or other golf instructional content, which will be accessible on demand for any attendees and provides an excellent avenue to promote yourself and your facility at no cost.

When considering any existing videos you may have to submit or in developing any new content to share in the Western GOLFEXPO, you are welcome to cover any topic of your choosing. Videos should be between five to 45 minutes in length, include an introduction of yourself and a title relevant to the subject matter. Videos can be delivered in English or French.

Please also observe the following for any video submissions:
  • Film in landscape orientation (horizontal)
  • Video should be continuous (one clip or several short clips edited together)

PGA of BC PROFESSIONAL SPOTLIGHT -- LUKE McKENZIE
Head Professional, Eaglequest Golf Centre at Coquitlam

PGA of Canada member since: 1996

Why did you become a PGA of Canada Professional?
Growing up in Newmarket, Ont., I competed in junior golf & competed at a high level of hockey. I worked in the backshop at 10, I was a junior caddie at Scarborough Golf Club, spent all my summers on the course. My love of golf is the path I chose. I became the youngest member of the PGA of Canada at 17, starting my apprenticeship under my father who had over 25 years in the industry.

Who has influenced your career the most, and how?
My father is my greatest influence. He introduced me to the game, taught me the game, & I apprenticed under him. He made sure I knew all aspects of the industry. One year of my apprenticeship was spent working with the Superintendent & the greens crew - lessons I am grateful for to this day.

Which significant accomplishments are you most proud of?
I would have to say the biggest accomplishment is that I am a GM/Director of Golf in an industry I have worked in since I was 10 years old and still love what I do. I have worked from public, to resort, private and exclusive clubs and enjoyed every step of the way.

What is your most cherished golf memory?
Taking my son to the US Kids World Golf Championship in Pinehurst when he was 6 years old. Nothing can top that feeling.

FACT OF THE WEEK
Perhaps you've been enjoying the action from the Winter Olympics in Beijing, but did you know that some PGA of BC members have Olympic pasts of their own?

Craig Young (Royal Colwood Golf Club) competed for Team Canada at the 1988 Winter Games in Calgary, placing 12th in men's ski ballet (also known as acroski), which was a demonstration sport at the time.

That was just one highlight of a tremendous career Young had in freestyle skiing. He made 121 World Cup starts in acroski, aerials and moguls between 1984 and 1992, earning more than three-dozen top-10 finishes, including a podium result in acroski in Calgary in 1990.
Meanwhile, Alan Kristmanson (Whistler Golf Club) was a member of the Canadian men's basketball team that placed sixth at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul.

His most notable performance came in a near-upset of the American squad, when Kristmanson put up 25 points in a 76-70 defeat.

For his impressive career as a player and later an NBA broadcaster, providing colour commentary for Vancouver Grizzlies games on Sportsnet, Kristmanson was inducted into the BC Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008.
