APPLICATION WINDOW NOW OPEN FOR SCHOLARSHIP & BURSARY
Members are advised that applications are now being accepted for the 2022 Jim Gibson Scholarship and PGA of BC Community Leadership Bursary.
 
The Jim Gibson Scholarship is given annually to an individual within the PGA of BC community that best exemplifies volunteerism and demonstrates dedication to furthering their education to benefit others in a community. The 2021 recipient was Robert Clarke (Nanaimo Golf Club) to assist his pursuit of High-Performance Coaching and Leadership and the University of British Columbia.
 
The PGA of BC Community Leadership Bursary is awarded to an individual or member facility within the Association demonstrating an extraordinary desire and passion to make a significant difference in the lives of those around them, and in doing so, sets an example of “giving back” that all PGA of BC members can be proud of. The 2021 recipient was Larry Ramstad (Lone Wolf Golf Club) to benefit the continued growth and accessibility of junior golf in the surrounding areas of Taylor, BC.
 
Both awards are in the amount of $1,000. Applications will be accepted until September 16th.

GOLFATHON FOR ALS WRAPS UP ITS 17TH YEAR
With the final Golfathon for ALS events having taken place earlier this week, the PGA of BC would like to send a heartfelt thanks to all those who took part in the 2022 campaign.

Over 30 facilities participated in the 17th annual event raising funds for the ALS Society of BC benefiting patient services. As donations continue to roll in over the next few weeks, a final tabulation will be calculated and presented later this fall at the 2022 PGA of BC Awards Celebration presented by Replay Golf Supplies & Tribal.

Additionally, local Courtenay, BC artist, Don Hardy, has generously donated an original framed painting of the 9th Hole at Crown Isle Resort & Golf Community (pictured) as a thank you for the efforts of all golf professionals. The PGA of BC Administration conducted a draw of all PGA of BC members participating in the 2022 Golfathon for ALS and the lucky recipient of the art piece is Norm Jackson of Cowichan Golf Club.

CHILLIWACK GOLF CLUB WINS PRO-ASSISTANT CHAMPIONSHIP
The Chilliwack Golf Club team of Ryan Tofani and Zach Olson capture the facility’s first G&G Brands & Callaway Golf PGA of BC Pro-Assistant Championship at Crown Isle Resort & Golf Community.

Chilliwack Golf Club got off to a great start in the final round making birdies on each of the first five holes in the scramble format. They went on to blitz Crown Isle for nine total birdies and an eagle to shoot a tournament low 11-under 61. They played near flawless golf throughout the tournament, making a total of 14 birdies and one eagle to no bogeys on their way to a 16-under par team total. They edged three teams by two strokes to earn the $3,200 first place cheque.

CONGRATULATIONS
Modern Golf Vancouver's Cory Renfrew (pictured above) topped the field of 39 players to claim medalist honours on Monday at the G&G Tour Event at Sandpiper Golf Course in Harrison Mills, BC.

Renfrew's round featured six birdies en route to a 4-under par 68 and a one-shot victory over Christine Wong (University Golf Club). He collects $675 for his second win of the season. Cheam Mountain Golf Course's Kevin Stinson rounds out the top three, posting a 2-under par 70.

For their efforts, Wong cashes $525 as runner-up, while Stinson takes home $450.

Meanwhile at Monday's Kootenay Pro Tour event at Golden Golf Club, Jeremy Johnson was the only player to post in red numbers, collecting his first win of the season. His 2-under par 70 was good for a $612 pay day and a two-stroke victory over Jeff Wiggins, who collects $382. Kimberley Golf Club Apprentice Professional, Dan Bourgeois finished in third place and $306 after posting 73.

At which golf facility did you first begin working within the industry, and who was the PGA Professional?
Breezy Bend Country Club just outside of Winnipeg. My first pro was Sandy Paterson who hired me to pick the range when I was 13 years old.

What career path led you to where you are today?
I was studying political science in University but quickly found it wasn't for me. When an opening came up at my home course, I decided to change my career path and turned pro.

What is a common misconception that golfers make about what your job entails?
What happens behind the scene of managing a golf operation. Most members think all I do is play golf. One could only wish!

What is an interesting fact about yourself that doesn't involve golf?
I have an amazing wife, Becky and 20 month old son Oliver. I've also ridden the Whistler Gran Fondo, twice.
