ASSISTANTS' & SENIORS' CHAMPIONSHIPS SET TO RETURN AT KAMLOOPS G&CC
After a year away, the PGA of BC Assistants' & Seniors' Championships presented by Natera Sport & Arbor Memorial will be making a welcomed return next week at Kamloops Golf & Country Club, which hosts the 36-hole tournaments on Monday and Tuesday.

After both tournaments were wiped out in 2020 for precautionary measures related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Association is pleased to have 99 players competing between the two events, which have seen their fields shaken up a bit since they were last contested at Seymour Golf & Country Club in 2019. Neither event will have a defending champion competing, but there will be plenty of talented players in the mix for the two titles.

A deep Assistants' Championship field will include a number of first-time competitors who could be a factor, including reigning PGA of BC Champion Keith Martin (Tower Ranch Golf Club). It will also feature the return of the tournament's most successful player, as five-time winner Bryn Parry (Seymour Creek Golf Centre) will be back in action after stepping away from tournament golf in 2020. Notables making their Seniors' Championship debuts include three-time PGA of BC titleholder Rob Anderson (Kelowna Golf & Country Club) and 2002 Assistants Champion Jeff Buder (University Golf Club).

VENUE REVEALED FOR PGA of BC WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP
The PGA of BC is pleased to announce the dates and location for the 2021 PGA of BC Women's Championship presented by Dexim Golfwear.

The 36-hole, individual stableford-scoring tournament will be held Sept. 28-29 at Northview Golf & Country Club, contested on the Ridge Course. Our thanks to Head Professional Greg Pool and club staff for accommodating what will be our final championship event of 2021. The defending champion is Christine Wong (University Golf Club), who captured last year's title at Richmond Country Club.

APPLICATION WINDOW NOW OPEN FOR SCHOLARSHIP & BURSARY
Members are advised that applications are now being accepted for the 2021 Jim Gibson Scholarship and PGA of BC Community Leadership Bursary.

The Jim Gibson Scholarship is given annually to an individual within the PGA of BC community that best exemplifies volunteerism and demonstrates dedication to furthering their education to benefit others in a community. The 2020 recipient was Jennifer Greggain (Golf Canada) to assist her pursuit of a two-year master's degree in High-Performance Coaching and Leadership and the University of British Columbia.
 
The PGA of BC Community Leadership Bursary is awarded to an individual or member facility within the Association demonstrating an extraordinary desire and passion to make a significant difference in the lives of those around them, and in doing so, sets an example of “giving back” that all PGA of BC members can be proud of. The 2020 recipient was Kyla Inaba (Predator Ridge Resort) to benefit the Swing Like a Girl program she oversees and to further her expertise in coaching and instruction.
 
Both awards are in the amount of $1,000. Applications will be accepted until Sept. 10.

ELEVEN APPLICANTS MEET TARGET SCORES IN LATEST PGA of BC PAT
Eleven out of the 14 participants in Tuesday's PGA of BC Playing Ability Test held on the Riverside Course at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort were successful in meeting their respective target scores.

By demonstrating their high standard of skill on the resort’s Riverside Course, the successful applicants took an important step toward achieving membership as an Apprentice Professional within the PGA of Canada. RECENT RESULTS
Regional-tour play in both the Kootenays and the Interior on Monday saw visiting Professionals from outside the two areas secure playoff victories.

In what served as a great tune-up for next week's Assistants' & Seniors' Championships, Kevin Stinson (Cheam Mountain Golf Course, pictured) topped Brett Burgeson (Breaking Par Golf Academy) in a playoff at Kamloops Golf & Country Club after both players carded 5-under-par 67s to tie for first. Stinson took home $500 for the win while Burgeson earned $330 as the runner-up. Brian McDonald (Fairview Mountain Golf Club) collected $280 with a 68 that earned a solo third-place finish, one of nine sub-par rounds recorded by the 31-player field.
In the Kootenay Pro Tour stop at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort, extra holes were needed on the Riverside Course before Casey Johnson (PGA of Canada National Zone, pictured) outlasted Jeremy Johnson (Fairmont Hot Springs Resort) for the title. Casey Johnson made birdie on the third playoff hole to break the deadlock and pocket $475 after both players shot 2-under 69s. Jeremy Johnson had a $360 payday for finishing second, while Dennis Bradley (Copper Point Golf Club) banked $250 for placing third with a 71.
CONGRATULATIONS
The PGA of BC is pleased to share that Talking Rock Golf Course Head Professional Nathan Grieve married fiancée Carmen this past weekend.

The Grieves were surrounded by close family members and friends for their wedding in Salmon Arm.

Nathan and Carmen are enjoying time in the Kootenays this week, including some rounds of golf at Copper Point Golf Club to help mark the occasion.

The PGA of BC extends its best wishes to the happy couple!

At which golf facility did you first begin working within the industry, and who was the PGA Professional? 
Mattick's Farm (now the site of Cordova Bay Golf Course), Laurie Carroll was the Head Professional.

What career path led you to where you are today? 
It's been an interesting journey... After leaving the tour, I began my teaching career. The many stops along the way included the Victoria Academy of Golf, Director of Instruction of the GBC Golf Academy ay Olympic View, Academy Director at Bear Mountain, owner of the Randle Golf Academy at Morningstar, Director of Coaching at The Golf Lab, Academy Director at The Premier Royal Academy, Lead Coach at the Golf Performance Project and presently the Head Professional at Morningstar. As I said, it's been a great journey!

Which significant accomplishments are you most proud of? 
I'm proud of my playing accomplishments and the many cool things I have done as a teacher and coach but mostly I'm proud of the positive impact I feel I have made with many golfers, fellow professionals and facilities.

What is your most cherished golf memory? 
The ovation on the first tee of the Canadian Open when they announced me as a Canadian.

FACT OF THE WEEK
The winner of the PGA of BC Seniors’ Championship next week will have their named etched on the Ben Colk Trophy, which is named in honour of the former Association President who served as Head Professional at Langara Golf Course and Richmond Country Club. 

Colk was also instrumental in the development of Fairwinds Golf Club and in renovations at Sunnydale Golf & Country Club and Eaglecrest Golf Club. A notable figure in the golf-retail market, Colk was the first to introduce and distribute pull carts within British Columbia. Colk was also a instructor to many accomplished players, including Alvie Thompson, Bob Cox, Bob Kidd and brother-in-law Walt McElroy, whom he coached to a victory in the 1951 Canadian Amateur Championship. During the winter months, he often served as a caddie at PGA Tour events for Stan Leonard. 

Upon the founding of the Seniors’ Championship in 1995, Colk often presented the trophy bearing his name to each year’s winner before his passing in 2005 -- he's pictured here presenting the trophy to Greg Pidlaski in 2001. Given his impact on the golf-retail sector in the province, the PGA of BC Golf Shop of the Year Award is named in Colk’s honour as well.
