PROFESSIONALS BRAVE HEAT AS GOLFATHON FOR ALS WINDS DOWN FOR 2021
|
As temperatures soared across British Columbia this week, so too did the amount of donations in support of the Golfathon for ALS as Professionals across the province braved the heat in support of the cause.
More than a dozen Golfathons took place throughout BC since last Wednesday, with plenty of highlights to report.
Although thermometers hit the mid-40s in the Interior on Tuesday, that didn't stop the Golf Shuswap collective of Nathan Grieve, Dave Munn, Brody St-Martin, Lionel Taylor, Jeff Liddle and Brian O'Keefe from completing their five-course tour of the region. The group played 18 holes at each of Talking Rock Golf Course, Salmon Arm Golf Club, Shuswap Lake Estates Golf & Country Club, Shuswap National and Hyde Mountain Golf Course, documenting their full day during an Instagram Takeover of the ALS Society of BC's account. St-Martin also notched an ace during the group's first round of the day at Talking Rock.
Special thanks also go to the groups at Crown Isle Resort & Golf Community, Richmond Country Club, Williams Lake Golf & Tennis Club, The Okanagan Golf Club and Seymour Golf & Country Club for going ahead with their Golfathons for ALS on Monday and Tuesday when temperature records were being smashed across the province.
Last week also saw impressive totals from Brian Coe and Keri Moffat, who achieved their goal of 10 loops of Mayfair Lakes Golf & Country Club and their highest total of donations over nine years of participating in the cause. Alec Hubert set a new personal record by playing 289 holes at Kamloops Golf & Country Club over an 18-hour stretch, just beating out his old mark of 288.
Cindy Soukoroff and Mike Pearson walked 72 holes each at St. Eugene Golf Resort & Casino, while Mount Paul Golf Course's Brett Greenman, Dan Latin and others collectively played nearly 300 holes last Wednesday.
With ALS Awareness Month drawing to a close, most participating facilities have now completed their Golfathon for ALS, though Fairview Mountain Golf Club's event is ongoing today, and Iron & Wood Golf Simulators will host a special 24-hour event with more than a dozen PGA of BC Professionals involved on July 13-14. Donations are still being accepted in support of the ALS Society of BC; click below to make a contribution or learn more about the initiative.

PRO-ASSISTANT CHAMPIONSHIP TEES OFF AT TALKING ROCK GC ON MONDAY
|
The PGA of BC's 2021 competition calendar is just days away from its opening event, as the G&G Golf Company & Callaway Golf Pro-Assistant Championship is set for Monday and Tuesday at Talking Rock Golf Course.
A capacity field of 50 teams is registered for the popular team event, making it the largest Pro-Assistant Championship on record. The 36-hole event will see Club Professionals (Head, Executive or Head Teaching Professionals) teaming up with another PGA of BC member from the same facility to play a best-ball format in Round 1 and a scramble for Round 2. Teams will be vying for a share of a purse exceeding $15,000, with $2,600 to be split by the winning duo.
The defending champions from Fairview Mountain Golf Club, Brian McDonald and Rob Tadey, headline a talented field that includes several other past champions. McDonald and Tadey have won two of the past four Pro-Assistant Championships and have yet to finish outside the top three of this event as a pair.
To look ahead to this year's tournament, the PGA of BC administration team caught up with McDonald and host Executive Professional Adam Blair for their pre-championship thoughts. Click below to read their comments, tournament facts and more in our comprehensive Pro-Assistant preview.

Jeremy Johnson (Fairmont Hot Springs Resort, pictured) returned to the winner's circle Monday when the Kootenay Pro Tour resumed its schedule at Golden Golf Club.
Johnson's steady, 1-under-par 71 included an eagle and a birdie against two bogeys to lock up a four-stroke victory over the field and secure a cheque for $450. Jeff Wiggins (The Springs at Radium) tied for second overall after shooting 75, which was worth a $300 payday. Brent Firminger (Golden Golf Club) recorded the third-best score by a PGA of BC Professional, a 76 that was worth $175. The shot of the day belonged to Steve Haggard (The Springs at Radium), who aced the par-3 16th hole to help him finish in the money. Click here for full results.

PGA of BC PROFESSIONAL SPOTLIGHT -- DEREK WHIPPLE
|
Apprentice Professional, Acushnet Canada
PGA of Canada member since: 2015
At which golf facility did you first begin working within the industry, and who was the PGA Professional?
I first started working as an Applicant at Westfield G&CC in New Brunswick under Head Professional Marshall McMahon a year after I answered my calling. Unfortunately, I failed the PAT that year. But, I did learn that there was more to golf that I needed to know than just the hitting the ball. I learned humility.
Who has influenced your career the most, and how?
I met with Alan Palmer shortly after becoming a member of the PGA of BC, who taught me to embrace my story and my journey. He also challenged me to strengthen my weaknesses and introduced me to the art of career shaping.
What is the most rewarding part about being a member of the PGA of BC?
I am a big fan of networking and sharing stories with the other members of the PGA of BC. I have met some of the finest men and women in the world. And, as rewarding as it is to learn from each and every one of them, it is even more rewarding when these relationships grow and become lifelong friendships.
What is your favourite golf course in British Columbia, and why?
That's easy: Bear Mountain! My wife Lynnette and I had our first date there. We loved it so much we got married there on Dec. 23, 2017. I also received an invitation to play in both Champions Tour Pro-Ams there in 2016 and 2017 and met all of my childhood heroes.

Though there are a handful of teams that have gone on to win more than one Pro-Assistant Championship title, no Professional has ever managed to capture multiple titles with different partners.
Rob Anderson (Kelowna Golf & Country Club) has likely come the closest. After winning the 2010 event alongside Ryan Matiushyk, Anderson and Jamie Stevens (pictured) were runners-up in a playoff at Talking Rock Golf Course in 2012, then finished second as a duo in 2019 at Copper Point Golf Club. Anderson and Stevens will reunite for next week's tournament at Talking Rock and once again be among the teams to watch.
