GOLFATHON FOR ALS AT ABERDEEN GLEN GC LASTS 18 HOURS; MORE TO COME
The 2021 PGA of BC Golfathon for ALS presented by Pacific Blue Cross is building steam across the province, with some of the 30-plus participating facilities having completed their long day of golf in the early days of ALS Awareness Month.

Though Jessey Church didn't quite reach his goal of 180 holes played at Aberdeen Glen Golf Club last Wednesday, he spent 18 hours on course and completed more than seven full rounds at the Prince George facility, all while accumulating thousands of dollars in donations from the local community.

"I would like to thank the PGA of BC, ALS Society of BC, Aberdeen Glen and all of the people who made donations for making this an extremely successful day," said Church. "I am proud of what we have been able to accomplish as an organization and hope to continue supporting this event for many years to come."

Today, a Golfathon for ALS is ongoing at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort, with Jeremy Johnson and Matt Gillett participating in support of the cause. On Thursday, Andy Hajer and Jayme Young will be conducting their 2021 Golfathon at Arbutus Ridge Golf Club, while Copper Point Golf Club's team of Brian Schaal, Scott McClain, Dale Moore and Dennis Bradley will be in action for their annual event on Tuesday.

The second half of June will see the majority of participating facilities complete their Golfathons for ALS, looking to garner donations in support of patients and their families throughout British Columbia. The initiative has raised more than $2.1 million over the past 15 years, including a record total exceeding $200,000 in 2020.

WAITLIST STARTED FOR PRO-ASSISTANT CHAMPIONSHIP
The 2021 PGA of BC championship schedule will be underway in a little more than one month from today when the G&G Golf Company & Callaway Golf PGA of BC Pro-Assistant Championship tees off at Talking Rock Golf Course.

The field for the popular team event taking place July 5-6 has now reached capacity with 50 two-person teams registered. Teams interested in being added to the tournament waitlist may contact Membership & Events Manager Doug Titterington at [email protected].

The Pro-Assistant Championship is a 36-hole tournament featuring two-player teams comprised of a Club Professional (Head, Executive or Head Teaching Professional) and another PGA of BC member affiliated at the same facility. This year's event is shaping up to set a participation record with 50 teams involved, which would make it the largest Pro-Assistant field since the 2005 tournament at Morgan Creek Golf Course welcomed 49 duos. Defending champions Brian McDonald and Rob Tadey are among several past winners in the field, looking to notch another title for Fairview Mountain Golf Club.

CONGRATULATIONS
Playing at his home facility, Paul Dashkewytch topped the field Monday when the Kootenay Pro Tour resumed its schedule at The Springs at Radium.

Dashkewytch (pictured) carded a 2-over-par 74 in difficult, windy conditions to earn a two-stroke victory and a $500 payday. Runner-up honours were shared by two players, as Jeff Wiggins (The Springs at Radium) and Casey Johnson (PGA of Canada - National Zone) both posted rounds of 76 to tie for second and take home $350 apiece.

PGA of BC PROFESSIONAL SPOTLIGHT -- JON KADIN
Class "A" Professional, Nielsen Agencies

PGA of Canada member since: 1999

Why did you become a PGA of Canada Professional?
I've been involved in the game since I was 10 and was "hired" by Al MacKenzie at the Penticton G&CC. Basically, my dad thought it would be a great way to keep me out of trouble as my teen years approached. I loved being at the golf course, and as I grew up I knew one day I wanted to be just like the Professionals I looked up to when I was young.

Who has influenced your career the most, and how?
Mike Parker, former Head Professional at Victoria GC. I was so young at the time and working under Mr. Parker taught me so much about my ensuing career, but most importantly about how to be an excellent PROFESSIONAL and person. Many lessons I learnt I still fall back on today!

What career path led you to where you are today?
I began pushing a broom, worked up to picking the range, cleaning clubs, and finally making it into "the shop." After nine years as Head Professional at Gallagher's Canyon GC, I was looking for a change. The opportunity to work with my friend Mark Lindsay as independent sales representatives was exciting. it is a rewarding career working with my colleagues to try and make their businesses the best they can be!

Which significant accomplishments are you most proud of?
Mentoring young Professionals who have gone onto their own HP, HTP, and GM roles. Multiple nominations for Professional of the Year in the Interior Region and twice being recognized as Sales Representative of the year in BC. And, of course, leading the Association as President from 2019-2021.
