Blustery conditions couldn’t stop Mark Kitts of Shadow Ridge Golf Club from capturing his first PGA of BC individual title at the 2019 Srixon/Cleveland Golf/XXIO PGA of BC Club Professional Championship presented by Oakcreek Golf & Turf at Kelowna Golf & Country Club.

Playing in his first Club Professional Championship, the first-year head professional began Tuesday’s second round two shots back of overnight leader Philip Jonas (Philip Jonas Golf Academy) but battled the elements and a sold-out field of 47 other players to finish the tournament at seven-under par to cap-off a one-shot victory and capture the Dick Munn Memorial trophy.

Kitts, who played the two-round tournament without any bogeys, shot rounds of 68 and 69 to claim the $2,700 first place cheque from the $15,000 Championship purse.

A late back-nine charge of three birdies in the closing five was one-shot short for 2016 Champion and head professional at Point Grey Golf & Country Club, Dave Zibrik. Zibrik shot rounds of 68 and 70 to earn $2,000 for his efforts. Brad Clapp (Cultus Lake Golf Club) and Jonas each finished at 5-under par, two shots back to round out the top 3 and each earn $1,275.

The PGA of BC Women's Championship presented by Dexim Golfwear will make its return to Point Grey Golf & Country Club on Tuesday and Wednesday next week, running in conjunction with the club's Ladies' Pro-Am for the second consecutive year.

The 36-hole event will once again feature a field full of past champions -- Patty Jonas (Philip Jonas Golf Academy), Jennifer Greggain (Chilliwack Golf Club), Salimah Mussani (Riverway Golf Course) and 2018 winner Ashley Zibrik (Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club) among them -- and other top talents from around the province.

Individuals interested in attending next month's PGA of BC Buying Show are reminded of tomorrow's registration deadline.

The Buying Show, which returns to Richmond Olympic Oval Oct. 16-17, is the biggest of its kind in British Columbia and represents the largest annual gathering of PGA of BC Professionals. More than 150 golf facilities were represented at last year's show, making it both a can't-miss event for industry exhibitors and a one-stop-shop for retailers and facility operators.

Five PGA of BC members finished among the top 10 in last week's PGA Assistants' Championship of Canada presented by Callaway Golf, wrapping up a great week at TPC Toronto that had already seen BC's squad win the Inter-Zone team competition.

Playing in the final group of Thursday's final round, Oliver Tubb (University Golf Club, pictured) closed with a 3-under 69 to finish solo 3rd at 15-under, four back of winner Wes Heffernan of Alberta. Tubb earned $3,175 for his efforts. Right behind in 4th place was reigning PGA of BC Champion Bryn Parry (Seymour Creek Golf Centre), whose 14-under total was worth $2,600.

Meanwhile, Kevin Stinson (Cheam Mountain Golf Course) placed T6 at 10-under, collecting $1,700. Ethan Danish (Two Eagles Golf Course & Academy) and Luke Bogdan (Ledgeview Golf Club) were in a group finishing T10 at 8-under, each making a cheque for $1,200.

Three others placed among the top 25, with Nate Ollis (Cordova Bay Golf Course) finishing T15, Isaac Weintraub (Salt Spring Island Golf & Country Club) placing T19 and Finlay Young (The Harvest Golf Club) at T22. The Kootenay Pro Tour concluded its 2019 campaign at the season-ending Tour Championship hosted at St. Eugene Golf Resort & Casino and Bootleg Gap Golf Course on Monday and Tuesday.

In difficult windy conditions, Jamie Curiston (Wildstone Golf Course) eagled the par 5 18th at Bootleg Gap to equal Trevor Simkin 's (Bootleg Gap Golf Course) 36-hole three-over-par total to force a playoff and then claimed the Tour Championship victory on the first extra hole. Curiston earned himself $900 for his efforts, while Simkins cashed the $675 second place prize. Scott McClain (Copper Point Golf Club) and Chris Medford (St. Eugene Golf Resort & Casino) shared third place and took home $400 each.

Curiston's hot finish also earned himself enough order of merit points to equal Jeremy Johnson's (Fairmont Hot Springs Resort) total and each take home a $400 bonus for their share of the season-long points race. Simkins and Medford finished third and fourth respectively in the final order of merit standings.

Members are reminded that PGA of Canada 2020 dues have been invoiced and must be paid by Nov. 1, 2019, in order to avoid late fees. 

 

Late fees will apply to any payments made after Nov. 1 but before the end of the calendar year. Those who have not paid their dues by the end of the calendar year, will have their membership suspended and be subject to reinstatement fee.

 

As per Association bylaws, members may obtain a full refund of dues (minus any applicable late fees) if resigning their membership by April 1, 2020. For that reason, members who remain uncertain regarding their status in the industry for the coming year are encouraged to pay their dues on time while determining their 2020 employment.
