Thank Goodness!

Two words describe November, "Thank Goodness!" It's been another long and difficult year; this makes two in a row. So to be able to flip the calendar to November is a welcomed relief. Leaf clean-up is the main item on the agenda for most of the month. We will be blowing out the irrigation system the morning of November 19, so bring your rain coat if you are planning to play that day.

Not only does "Thank Goodness" describe November, it also describes the grounds staff. I do believe I have one of the best grounds staff in the Chicagoland area. From Jake getting his feet wet with his first season on the course, to Hector Rubio completing his eighteenth season and everyone in between, I would like to thank you for your hard work and dedication to Pottawatomie. Wayne Heuertz, Jack Eddy, Larry Curtis, Vance Olson, Charlie Villanova, and Wayne Parchert are the "Heart of the Artichoke"! All retired and always willing to go the extra mile to present a nice course for you. I also had a really great group of high school and college employees this year. When Malik Hatch and Alex Marcusiu returned to school, Rich Artz, Emma Meyer, Jackson Hagerty and Jack Charles stepped up and helped us bring it home this fall.

Our natural areas continue to improve every year with the help from Joan Kramer and volunteer Doug Ranney. The knowledge they bring with them is immeasurable. A big thank you to Joan and Doug for all you put into the natural areas. Next year we will continue to restore the flood area in front of 5 black tee with more native plants.

We are going to try to repurpose the dying Oak tree next to the putting green. The plan is to save the trunk and have it professionally carved into a design that depicts the essence of Pottawatomie Golf Course. The estimated cost of this project is between $7000-$10,000. A lofty price tag, but one that I think will be worth in the long run. More info to follow.

Once again, I would like to thank you, for all of your kind comments, understanding and joy you bring to the course. May you and your families have a wonderful holiday season! Until next year...
Eliot Kaufman and Brian Shaunnessy put together a day of golf at Pottawatomie Golf Course to to help out an organization close to Eliot's heart (the Norther Illinois Food Bank), while
remembering their friend, Chris May who passed away earlier in the year.

The inaugural "Chris May Food Drive" to benefit the Northern Illinois Food Bank was a great success! On Sunday, October 28, golfers that played Pottawatomie Golf Course and the patrons of Avenue Two Barber shop helped raise $1200! For every $1 donated, the food bank is able to purchase $8 worth of food, so thank you all for your generous contributions!

Eliot and Brian would like to thank all those that participated in the event, and donated to the cause! A special thanks goes out to: Annette May for her donation of Keans Donuts (Chris' favorites), Jeff Orland from Avenue Two Barber Shop for donating breakfast, Alpha Baking, Kronos Foods and Vienna Beef for donating lunch, Patti Kaufman for all her food preparation, Bob and Sue Wulff from Write In Style Pens for their raffle donations and Pottawatomie Golf Course for their raffle donations.

Again, thank you all from the bottom our hearts! Keep your eyes
open for this event in September 2019!
