PGCEA Legislative Reception Reap

Friday night PGCEA hosted its annual legislative reception and hosted more than 20 elected officials. The association presented its legislative priorities and asked elected officials to take a pledge to show their commitment to improving public schools. A few of the key priorities include:

CLASSROOM SIZE? WHAT SHOULD IT BE?
Each year educators are plagued with unreasonable class sizes that negatively impact teaching and learning. PGCPS and PGCEA have formed a Joint Task Force to establish a mutually agreeable upon measure of class size. Your honest feedback and input is needed to effectuate change that will positively impact teaching and learning. This is an anonymous survey.

Educator Tips and Tools
I wanted to repeat the above piece as recently I was speaking to someone who asked why do you write about educator leadership and voice rather than just giving a teaching strategy; my reply is that educator leadership and voice on what matters in our profession is a teaching strategy of immense magnitude!
We must be stewards and advocates of our profession (and yes, I mean profession rather than job) as work of educators is vital to the core of our democratic society.
When educators stand up and speak up (lead) we do so for ourselves, students, community, and I firmly believe, the future good.

This year’s theme is
African and Latino American Experiences of Everyday People
. The celebration will feature student performances and keynote address that explores the everyday experiences of African and Latino American Experiences of Everyday People. The celebration will also be honoring the recipients of the Reginald F. Lewis Student Art Awards, MSEA sponsored awards like the Dot Lloyd, Human and Civil Rights, and Minority Recognition awards.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration

On Thursday, January 17th at 4:30 pm at Kingsford Elementary School in Woodmore, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay and Poster contest winners will celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The contest is open to all Prince George’s County Public School students in grades three through twelve (3rd-12th).
The contestants will write their essays on the following topic:
Essay: How would Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. lead a civil rights movement to humanize the Immigration crisis in the United States of America.
Art: Choose a quote from Martin Luther King Jr. Speeches and bring it to life. (The quote must be written on the poster)
Applications need to go out by October 15, 2019. Deadline is December 15th 2019.
Venue: Kingsford Elementary School Time:6:30 pm
Prizes will be for 1st, 2nd , 3rd places.

What to do if you are accused of abusing a student?

Assault Leave
What is Assault Leave:
PGCEA/Unit I Members “may be entitled to receive paid leave time for employees for an assault occurring within the scope of employment. Employees of the Board of Education of Prince George’s County whose absence is due to a physical disability resulting from an unprovoked assault occurring within the scope of their employment, may be entitled to full pay status, instead of sick leave or Sick Leave Bank participation, provided they comply with all of the procedures cited hereafter.”

If you are assaulted while working by a student, parent, etc., you can apply for Assault Leave. In addition to contacting your principal or immediate supervisor immediately, please be certain to do the following:
• File a Workers Compensation Claim by contacting the Injured Employee Hotline / 1-800-774-2447 prior to seeking medical attention (if possible). Be certain to obtain a Workers Comp Claim Number.
• Seek medical attention within twenty-four (24) hours of the incident. Be certain to report it as a Workers Comp Injury and provide the Workers Comp Claim Number during intake.
• Complete a Security Incident Report Form (available at your school).
• Complete the Request for Assault Leave Form (available at your school). You have the option of stating “See Security Incident Report Form” in the fields that ask for duplicate information.
• Ensure the initial report of injury or physician’s statement has been sent to Risk Management/Workers Compensation (this will be done when you provide the Workers Comp Claim number when seeking medical attention).
When complete, submit the forms to your school for processing. The Assault Leave Administrative Procedure has changed, and it is no longer required to contact a law enforcement agency and file a complaint or warrant against the accused. If you have questions after completing these steps, please feel free to contact PGCEA and ask for a UniServ Director, and someone will provide assistance.

Know Your Contract
Article 17.H- Authorized Leaves With Pay - Personal Leave:
Unit I member employed on other than twelve-month contract may be absent from duty without loss of pay up to four days during any school year. A request for personal leave should be entered in appropriate time management system at least one (1) day prior to the intended absence. No specific reason for such personal leave shall be required or solicited except as noted.in item 2 and item 4 below. In case of emergency, the appropriate school official shall be notified prior to the beginning of the duty day of intended absence. Rules regarding personal leave are as follows:
• Leave immediately before or after a holiday, emergency makeup, vacation or staff development day(s) may be requested for reason and must have final approval from the Chief Human Resources Officer. Such leave request must be received by the Office of the Chief Human Resources Officer at least two weeks in advance. Unless officially notified of the Chief Human Resources Officer’s decision no later than five (5) days after receipt of the leave request, the requested leave will be approved.
• No personal leave will be granted during the first or last five (5) days of any school year except as may be approved in writing from the Chief Human Resources Officer. Consideration for approval will be confined to those applications wherein this time is essential for summer school attendance as certified by the registrar of any regularly recognized college or university.
