What is a Sabbatical?
Several of you have asked what a Sabbatical is, and what I will be doing on my Sabbatical. In our denomination, the General Commission on Ministry, the Office of Search and Call provides guidelines for a Sabbatical Leave for Pastors. According to those guidelines, “Most Regions of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ encourage a three-month Sabbatical/Renewal Leave after five years of ministry.” I left a 90-day Sabbatical behind to come to Park Hill and negotiated a 30-day Sabbatical after two years. The purpose of a Sabbatical is spiritual renewal and growth. The time away is not intended to be a vacation, but a time for study, spiritual renewal, and a restful time of Sabbath. I have identified seven spiritual partners who will assign me spiritual practices for daily reflection. While I will not be engaged in the daily life of the congregation, I will be available for emergencies, for example, the death of one of our church members.
