PHEN Expands Community Outreach in 2024
Ambassadors Participate in Over 85 Events Nationwide!

PHEN's national network of Ambassadors has been busy in 2024, spreading prostate cancer awareness at 85+ community events. Our Ambassadors support community events at churches, walks/runs, and other venues and speak on panels and programs. Education is provided using PHEN tools for early detection PHENPSA.com, treatment options PHENPath.com, and clinical trials PHENTrials.com. Here's a small roundup of how the PHEN network makes a big difference in our communities. | |
Ambassador Jerry Knight was a panelist at the Jackson Disparity Rally's Town Hall on February 28th, recorded an awareness message, and spoke at the third annual Black Men's Wellness Day on April 6th. He is also the president and founder of the prostate cancer support group You Are Not Alone. | | |
Ambassador Barney Morris spoke at the Kappa Alpha Psi Health Fair on June 1st, as well as the Prostate Cancer Symposium at the Moffit Center on April 6th. As a retired Air Force Major, he received a plaque for his service at their annual Veterans Day celebration. Click here to watch his story on the local news. | |
Ambassador Dr. Artie Shelton participated in a Self-Care Health Expo sponsored by the Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Centreville, Virginia on February 10th. Dr. Shelton also attended the Shades of Pink & Blue Breast and Prostate Cancer Awareness Fundraising Event in Greenbelt, Maryland on October 13th. The Loving Kindness CDC's Director of Spiritual Development Vera Williams and Executive Director Petrina Nelson presented Dr. Shelton with a $500 check for PHEN. | | |
Ambassador Ray Fuller participated in a Juneteenth Celebration in Port Wentworth, Georgia. At the event, he spoke with more than 40 people whose lives were affected by prostate cancer. Fuller also met with Mayor Van Johnson of Savannah, Georgia, who is also a prostate cancer survivor. Ambassador Fuller paved the way for a relationship with the International Longshoremen's Association, passing out information and giving presentations to the group on the importance of prostate cancer screening and early detection. | |
Charlotte, North Carolina | On May 14th, Ambassador Jerry Womack attended a breakfast presentation sponsored by PHEN and held by the Black Men With a Purpose (BMWP) organization in Charlotte, North Carolina. Womack also attended the Spoilers Men’s Golf Club Conference from May 23rd through May 26th at the Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor, Florida. He presented key information about early detection, prostate cancer screening, and the benefits of clinical trial participation to 30 Black golfers and distributed flyers to attendees. | Ambassador Womack attended the Black Health Matters Fall 2024 Summit on November 16th at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, where PHEN sponsored a vendor exhibit. Thousands of attendees participated in this hybrid health summit and expo, with workshops, screenings, and celebrity panels. Ambassador Womack spoke with hundreds of men and participants, encouraging them to access PHEN's prostate cancer educational resources and programs. | | |
On March 16th, Ambassador DeWayne Charleston attended the Men's Prayer Breakfast at St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church. He shared information about PHEN and his prostate cancer journey. The event included 40 attendees and Mayor Ron Leverett of Prairie View, Texas. Charleston was also interviewed for the Everybody Loves Crystal podcast and attended another important health event at a School of Pharmacy on April 20th, where he managed an exhibit table and lectured on prostate cancer awareness. | Ambassador Charleston participated in numerous events and activities throughout September, Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. He spoke at several churches and was featured as a panelist on countless radio, television, and podcast programs throughout Houston. He was also a guest panelist at Texas Southern University, where he received a service award from on behalf of the Texas Southern University Prostate Cancer Screening Center. | |
PHEN partnered with the Forrest County NAACP to hold a Prostate Health Symposium at the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. The event had 42 attendees. PHEN Director of Patient Education and Clinical Trials, Dr. Keith Crawford, spoke about the importance of early detection screening, clinical trial participation, the PHEN Church Partnership program, and how to find treatment options. Dr. Crawford was also part of a televised interview on and the event was featured on WGDQ 93.1 FM. Watch his interview here on WDAM-TV. | | |
Former Florida State Senator and PHEN’s Policy Coordinator, Tony Hill, participated in the PHEN panel discussion at the Sons of Allen retreat on May 17th. With more than 150 people in attendance, he focused on the policy side and federal legislation from Washington, D.C., known as the PSA Screening for HIM Act, which eliminates cost barriers to prostate cancer screening for high-risk insured men. | |
Military Veteran and PHEN Ambassador A.J. Merriweather has brought the importance of prostate health education to his new Jacksonville-based cable TV show called Men's Health Matters: Prostate Edition. Merriweather's brothers served as guests and discussed their diagnoses of prostate cancer and prostate issues. Read their story in the Jacksonville Free Press. |
Ambassador AJ Merriweather also teamed up with PHEN Survivor Network member James Damin and former Senator Tony Hill on June 15th to host a Father’s Day Rally. Mr. James Daniel, a PHEN Network Survivor, also attended the Rally, which was held at The Hospital Church of Jacksonville.

Ambassadors Dr. Artie Shelton and Dr. James Smith attended the Men’s Health Empowerment Expo in Alexandria, Virginia, on June 8th. The event, sponsored by the Alexandria Health Department, offered numerous educational sessions, including one on prostate cancer awareness. Dr. Shelton and Dr. Smith presented twice on prostate health at this exhibition. The Alexandria Health Department also presented PHEN with a Certificate of Appreciation for participating in the event. | |

Dr. Crawford also presented at a Prostate Cancer Awareness event on September 28th at MassBay Community College. The event featured patient testimonials, screenings, and educational seminars in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. | |
