A 'Super' BBQ Success
Due in large measure to the support of our members and the outstanding, slow smoked ribs and Boston butts prepared by Hawg Wash BBQ Catering, our Super Bowl Weekend fundraiser was a huge success. Net proceeds from the event topped $1,300. and represents a substantial addition to the Safety Security Revitalization Fund. Pork sandwiches and pulled pork by the pound added to the success of the event.

A special thank you to Brad Kay and Hawg Wash BBQ Catering for all the time and effort that they contributed to make our Super Bowl Weekend Fundraiser a huge success. At PHFC, we go out of our way to support the businesses that support PHFC. So if your planning a party or special get-together, give Hawg Wash BBQ Catering a call @864-993-1109.

Pickleball is Back!
On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, weather permitting, from approximately 8:30 AM until 10:30 AM, you can find a diverse group of pickleball players at Pomona Park’s Mayor John C. Bergquist, Jr Park.  Pickleball is a paddle sport created for all ages and skill levels. The rules are simple, and the game is easy for beginners to learn; however, pickleball can also develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. It is a fun sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong.

Want to join the fun? It’s easy. Just show up at the park’s tennis courts. Putnam Health & Fitness Center has extra paddles and the experienced players encourage and welcome players new to the game. The Pomona Park group rotates players, giving everyone a chance to play and a chance to rest.

Some players come after their PHFC workout. Others leave early to attend exercise classes at the Fitness Center. Whatever fits your schedule.

SilverSneakers ® Classes Explode
As people resolve to get in shape, fitness centers fill up during January and Putnam Health & Fitness Center is no exception. PHFC not only had an influx of new members in January, but we also have the return of our winter members and friends.

You can see this increase of members by the crowded parking lot and the size of the group exercises classes, especially SilverSneakers ® . The SilverSneakers class on Thursday, January 31, taught by Elaine Edwards, had a record 44 participants.

Scanning your SilverSneakers card each time you work out can be rewarding. Linda, a PHFC member, recently earned a $50.00 Walmart gift card by scanning her SilverSneakers card at PHFC. Check your insurance policy to see what you could be earning.

Scanning your SilverSneakers card is how your insurance company pays PHFC. By scanning both your SilverSneakers card and your PHFC Membership card/tag, you’re helping PHFC keep accurate records which are needed for proper insurance coverage for you and PHFC.

SilverSneakers Annual Participant Survey of more than 26,000 members reveals that older Americans are exercising and socializing to improve and maintain their health to lead an active lifestyle as they age. More than 91-percent of members share that the program has improved their quality of life, 90-percent feel healthier overall and 94-percent say their health is good, very good or excellent.

PHFC has 7-weekly SilverSneakers classes, including the very popular Chair Yoga, taught by Elaine Edwards. Members can attend any group exercise classes free of charge as well as utilize all PHFC facilities and equipment.

If you know of someone who would like to become certified to teach a group exercise class, please see PHFC’s Executive Director, Rhonda Walsh.

Your Brain on Exercise
We’ve all been there before: a tough day at work, with the kids, or in school. We’re exhausted, both mentally and physically, but we still manage to push ourselves and get to the gym. Why do we do it? Because we know how much better we’ll feel after an evening indoor cycling class, an hour of kickboxing or a challenging weight workout. We leave feeling refreshed, rejuvenated and invigorated—truly transformed.

Clearly, there’s a relationship between exercise and the brain, but what is it? What creates such a dramatic improvement in mood, mental health and even memory following a workout?
