INDECISIVE, INCOMPETENT, AND INSULTING

As always, we made sure that housing providers were represented at the Rent Board meeting on March 5th. We were disappointed, but not surprised, by the behavior of the Board.

Members spent over an hour talking yet again about how to elect their own Chair, and about how they are paid. At over $45 per hour, this is clearly a topic that matters to them. After all this time, the Board couldn't even reach a decision, so housing providers will have to pay them to talk about their pay again in the future.

This reckless approach to spending also appeared in a proposal to increase spending by 8% next year, with demands from Board activists to spend even more on free lawyers for tenants. As we warned you last year, the Rent Board is trying to normalize ultra-high fees, paid for by housing providers, to pay for its own pet projects.

In the end, the Chair had to chastise one Board member for making obscene gestures to a member of the public.

FIXING THE BROKEN RENT BOARD

Following in the footsteps of our friends at the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, we will file our ballot measure with the City of Pasadena early next week.

We've carried out two voter surveys, which show an appetite for change. Over 80% of voters want a fair Rent Board with an equal number of tenants and landlords.

At this time, your contributions for our ballot qualification and marketing may be deductible as an operating expense. Once our ballot measure is submitted to the city, contributions will not be deductible. Please check with your professional tax advisor. Please Contribute Online HERE

Our Measure will guarantee:

  • An equal number of landlords and tenants on the rent board
  • Preserving Costa-Hawkins to prevent Vacancy Control (protecting 1/3 of multi-family property values)
  • Capping out-of-control spending and fees
  • Merging the Rent Stabilization Department into the longstanding Department of Housing to save $3 million per year
  • Preserving reasonable rent control and eviction protections for tenants

Tenant activists from Oakland spent almost $400,000 to get Measure H passed in 2022. To get a fair and efficient rent board, we need to spend even more than that.

Please contribute $120 per year for each rented unit that you own or manage. This includes single family homes, apartments, condos and ADUs, which are ALL covered under Measure H.

Thank you for your support and engagement!
